I'm hoping to make my own backdrop set up .what i want to know will lighting stands take the weight of a 4mtr backdrop.
 
What material is your backdrop going to be made out of? 4 meters is a wide span so, depending on what your backdrop is made out of, Id say lighting stands would not take the weight. Also, the support beam will need to be belt and braces.
 
Sorry shuld have said ,it's a velvet backdrop that will be the used more than anything else .and it's only 1.6mtrs wide and 4 mtrs long. The bar is no problem is finding stands that i'm worried about.
 
If it's only thin velvet you should be alright with almost anything really... a couple of heavy duty-ish light stands that are 3m tall or so should be fine. Bowens, lastolite, manfrotto or calumet all do them.

Calumet do some for £56 or so that go to 4.2m tall or so if you really want extra height, and are bombproof.
 
Hi Razer

You might consider a couple of adjustable Builders/DIY support rods instead, as they are stronger, more versatile, take up less floor space and offer much more stability than lighting stands. They quickly clamp between floor and ceiling, or you can use them horizontally if the room is not too wide. The Screwfix link below shows you the sort of thing, but I bought a pair from Lidl for about £6 each. They are also great for holding lighting, reflectors and flags, not to mention being handy for DIY jobs.

Sorry Sam missed your post .I forgot about those ,They use them to hold up plaster poard on building sites.

Yes that’s right Razor.

I find them much better than lighting stands, which often need sandbag to ensure they don’t fall over when supporting stuff like backdrops etc. and especially if there are kids running around.

The Screwfix type supports that I have work pretty much like the old ‘Polecat’ photographic system that were very popular when they were available some years ago.

Hi kiteninja they look great,only i want something portable.
I think i'll go with the plasterboard poles,A lot lighter than carrying a three head lighting set and 5 light stands.I have found 2 on Ebay for £20.
