Hi all,

I'm about to order a few pieces of vinyl backdrop and flooring from http://www.photography-backdrops.co.uk/

Trouble is I want to join the backdrop and flooring with a length of skirting board (as can be seen in a lot of the examples on the site). Has anyone bought a similar setup and done this? How would I go about it baring in mind the backdrops and flooring are interchangeable so I wouldn't want to be gluing etc.

If it was me, I would think about using Velco on the back of the skirting to fix it too the backdrop. Fast and easy to change, easy to fit and not messy. It could damage the backdrop with repeated pulling, but this would depend on the strength of the backdrop and how careful you were with the removal. I have never done this, so you may find a better solution.
 
Rather than glueing vinyl to some ply for your floor why not buy a pack of laminate flooring?
I paid less than £10 for my pack of 10 lengths and that was from B&M stores.
Its easy to assemble and takes up less space when broken down than a sheet of ply.
 
I did consider that Stu as it would definitely make life a lot easier.

However the effect I'm after is an aged wood, like this http://www.photography-backdrops.co.uk/product.php?id=82 - so laminate can't really replicate that.

I'd happily just take the roll of laminate on location if I could guarantee a hard, flat surface was waiting for me when I got there.
 
You could do both. Get the cheap laminate for one look, allowing enough to have a board on each end with velcro on, then put some velcro on the underside of your vinyl so you can stick it down. More portable and you dont need to glue the vinyl to anything. And no, I dont work for velcro!
 
Cut the skirting board to a workable length vs background width, then use spring clamps to clamp the skirting to your background. If you're worried about tearing or damaging the vinyl get an off cut of skirting to clamp against the back of it e.g. skirting - vinyl - skirting, and use the clamp against the faces of the skirting board.

Cheap, easy to remove and it'll help keep the vinyl straight as it'll weight it down to a degree.

If you buy the 4ft x 4ft vinyl you will be laughing as most skirting comes in lengths of 8ft. Simple cut in half and bobs your uncle for your vinyl weights :)

I use spring claps . Dead easy to assemble , take down again . I decided to use the polypaper for the background to avoid reflections and vinyl on the floor for durability . All you have to do is clamp the skirting to the backdrop and the weight keeps it taught , just keep the clamps out of shot . I'm sure that I went for the 5ft width though to give me the extra working area .

Thanks John - reflections aren't something I'd considered to be honest. Might be an issue though as it's meant to look like paper after all - not vinyl.

Have you bought your stuff from http://www.photography-backdrops.co.uk ?

If so, what's the quality like?
 
Yep , that's where I got mine from . Took around a week for my order to arrive . The quality is very good and I have been looking at getting a couple more , I don't think that you will disappointed with them . :)

Great stuff mate - going to wait until payday then order two wallpapers and two floors. Then bolt down to B&Q for some skirting and a tin of gloss :)

I got my skirting from B&Q, good strong MDF stuff. I asked them if they would cut it in half for me. They told me they didn't have the facilities to do it but they could give me a saw a pencil and a measuring tape if I wanted to cut it in half myself on the shop floor. H&S springs to mind :confused: - did it anyway though for the minute it took to measure twice and cut once.

I actually left the skirting natural after considering painting it , once shot it just looks like a varnished one without the hard work of varnishing . See what you think first as it may save you a couple of pounds ;)

Sure that's where we got the stuff for the house from and it is good stuff.

Might have been worth lopping off the end of your finger... £££££££ :)
