hi , just getting the gear together for some portrait work ,
only problem im having is choosing a backdrop colour ,whats the best colour for general portrait photography, this is for personel use not comercial .
cheers kev;)

It's personal choice really.
If you go with white, you can underlight it to turn it grey, or slightly overlight to make it a clean white backdrop.
Or mid grey means you can underlight to black easily, or overlight to white.

You can underlight a white one to black if you tightly control your subject lighting and keep it off the backdrop, but it's much harder.

Or you can completely ignore all the above and go for something coloured, like a sky blue or yellow (I don't mean sky yellow!).
I've been assuming you're talking about a backdrop stand and paper rolls. but you may want to take a look at some of the portable pop up solutions that are available. Light and easy to transport, and are quite compact once you get the hang of folding them up.

Well, again, there's a huge array of choices. The tie-n-dye type are quite popular, or again there are solid colours.
I wouldn't necessarily go for one of those "painted scene" type backdrops. Even if they are incredibly realistic (and some of them are, whilst others are worth a chuckle!), they tend not to photograph well, as the background elements do not react to the lighting direction etc, so it can look odd.

Yep, White or grey. Tbh there is a reason most people use this. It's the most versatile and the best. Plus if you blow the background out, you can always chop it out an replace it with another colour in post. Personally I just love grey. Things to think about also are cloth creases and paper rips, so my fav choice is dip into the piggy bank and get vinyl when your settled on a colour as it's stronger and you can wipe it clean.
