Hi
I have just purchased another external hard drive, I normally use Synctoy to back up pictures which works fine however I do have other stuff other than photos, so rather than using Synctoy for photos then drag and drop other items and go through the whole process is there another bit software that you recommend for backing up all in one? being a tight arse preferably free :D

synctoy should do more than just photos?

Well Neil there is a thing I have not tried it, someone I know tried it and said it only does photos
having done a bit of research synctoy does do more than photos, the only thing it is as far as I can make out paired by folder only, I was thinking the whole drive at a time

can you not just set the source folder as d:\ (for example)?

Hmmm not a bad idea Neil

I will be a bit more specific it might help

Computer capacity 150gb backed up to first external portable drive 500gb as and when computer got a bit full then delete, have now purchased second external hard drive, my plan is to use these 2 external drives for storage of all things personal, pics docs etc and not use the internal hard drive.
Here lies my issue I think :suspect: how to create one master folder at the start from folders in various places on the computer

I need to think about this

You got me thinking Neil :)

On ext hard drive 1 put everything that is on there now into one folder and back up to ext hard drive 2
Then create a second folder on drive 1 upload everything new to there and back up periodically. That would work I think!:shrug:

I use Freefilesync and Karen's Replicator. Both are free and will handle any files you care to copy over.

Here's an example of the config for Freefilesync to copy from various drives/folders on my laptop to a USB HDD and my media server....

And here's an example of Karen's Replicator, in this case configured just to copy my processed photos to my media server and my Dropbox files to my Skydrive.

Freefilesync has more power to tweak file filters and choose the method of synchronisation - update, mirror, two-way etc. It also allows you to preview the operations before execution. Karen's Replicator is a bit simpler in function and with no preview, but perfectly capable.

Synctoy backs up all data, not just photos.

Most of my data is in My Documents ( My Pictures, My Music, etc. etc.) so I just back that up.

Then I just have to backup my Downloads folder.

Thank you Tim Freefilesync was one that came up earlier as a popular choice, looks like just the thing I need

thank you Mike one of my problems is I do not keep everything in one place which is something I need to address

Freefilesync, great easy interface and works pretty quick, thank you Tim

Synctoy does all files not just photos as others have said.
You do need to set up folder pairs i.e. folder Finance on Desktop pairs with folder Finance on backup drive but you can select All Folders and it will backup all the folder pairs without you having to select and backup each one individually.

Batch file and use robocopy :)

Then you can specify as many folders as you want
