Back up Images solution

Hi,
I have had a search in this forum, but I am no wiser lol

I want to back up my images on a portable hard drive to store away from the house.
Once I have copied them all over once, which I realise will take a while the first time.
I was hoping to find some software that would then only pick out new images to copy over.
I use Lightroom and Windows 8 and save my back up catalogue to a USB stick.

So if it alls goes horribly wrong, I should be able to sort myself out!

Sorry if this has been asked many times before, I have had a search and a read.

Synctoy will do what you need.
 
As Mike says Synctoy will do that, it's what I use to carry out that exact type of operation.

The Synctoy 'Action' being set to Echo to write new and updated images to the portable drive.
 
Just started using Pipemetric Bvckup 2 - excellent piece of software.

Set up as many back ups / syncs as you want, either set up schedules for syncing or just when the device is detected.
 
I use robocopy. USB HDD get plugged in whenever I need to do a backup, run the robocopy script (which is blisteringly quick) and then put the HDD somewhere else.

I used to use synctoy but found it had reliability issues on bigger job and some files. Would miss out some, would fall over sometimes. Never managed to make it work reliably, so gave up and used robocopy!

I just copy images to various places when I import them after each shoot. Job done, and I know everything is 'safe' as soon as it can be, rather than waiting for an automated or interval based software to sort it all.

Because if I go back and do some edits and export them, or get rid of some files from an old shoot, or use the same method from backing up all my files, these programs do the hard work, so I don't have to keep a mental list of everything that isn't yet backed up!

I could recover from a catastrophic failure of my system & data drives in under an hour this way.
