As my A level course is almost all film based, we've been given a shopping list of stuff we need. I've already spent about £75 today and I'm not even half way through the list

Can anyone give me some pointers on where I can get bargain supplies of stuff like Ilford film and paper? I didn't realise this would be so expensive - I've got all my digital stuff now I'm starting from scratch with film :help: In the 4 weeks I've been on the course, it's cost me £400

Cheers :)

I was told 7 day shop was quite cheap on stuff

what paper and film do you need as we get Ilford stuff discounted quite a bit from the college i'm doing my course at.

also if you have a NUS card Jessops offer a 10% discount on Film and processing stuff.

Ilford paper and film are the best. Try 7dayshop they will have some, if you really need it jessops will also have some. But I would say don't give those cowboys you hard earned money. Puffer brush and 8x lube are also handy the puffer brush for cleaning the neg before you put it in the enlarger and the lube for looking at ur contact sheets. HTH :)

Dont you have all this stuff provided for you by the place you are doing your course ?. All we had to buy when doing film was the film and the paper, everything we need like that the education establishment provides heavily discounted through its procurement channels.

We can even sign out kit to use and take home, sadley all the 35mm and small format digital is Nikon, medium format is Hassalblad and Phase One digital backs, etc, one guy even borrowed a full 4 light studio flash sytem for his own paying work for the weekend.

I have been given a shopping list of :
Ilford film
Ilford paper (10x8 and 9.5 x 12)
Print through bags
1/4" plate glass
Air Duster spray type stuff
pegs for hanging film to dry

The college do provide most things, but there are 40 of us on the course (now split into 2x20), so equipment is limited. They also have camera's, but only 3 of them, so i bought my own.

I got my film and bags from Jessops (with 10% discount), and have ordered some paper from novadarkroom.com - all at a cost of £75. I still have the rest of the stuff on my list to get.

What's the 1/4" plate glass for Min - glazing prints?

I've got a spare Loupe Mini, I'll dig it out tonight for you if I can find it.

Stick to Ilford Multigrade for resin prints (coursework) and Galerie for best (end-of-year exhibition).

If it's any consolation, I spend an average of £3k a term when I did my degree course in '85 and that was in the good old days when we got 'proper' student grants...

sadly as Nikon is only know to mankind Canon goes one step further

sadly as :canon:

Erm... something to do with making the sheet of contact prints  I wasn't paying that much attention as I was in shock at the time

They don't have contact boards there for you to use? :(

I'm another one doing a photography course, having to buy similar stuffs - and I've been getting most of it from 7dayshop, with the occasional emergency odds and ends from Jessops.
It is expensive, but I'm also really enjoying it - so hey ho!

Anyone know where I can get a lightbox, though? I have a diddy one from Jessops at the mo, which is OK - but I'd like something bigger!

Ah... of course. Lay the negs on the paper on the enlarger baseboard, then place the glass over the top to keep them flat. (Some of them tend to curl up)

I made one years ago Hoodi. A large sheet of diffusng glass, a bulb, some wood, and a bit of ingenuity? :)

LOL. I'm afraid not Ally - I got the instructions out of a library book, and it worked fine, as did the enlarger I built from instructions in the same book. The only bits I had to buy were an enlarging lens, two optical condensers and a bulb. :)

hoodi, i'm gonna make me a lightbox for the slides from my travels so if you fancy a chat about it get on msn. we can buy the materials together and maybe save a bit of money!

Don't forget to let us know how you get on...with pics :)

I'm using 7dayshop for my materials too, we can get them from the college but they are expensive in comparison.

As well as 7day shop there's MX2 but they tend to be more expensive. However I've used them on occasion when 7day have had no stock of. Still cheaper than Jessops
