back ground problem

i have this image i did for a friend and the back ground is rubbish how do i (in simple terms) smooth the black background out (i only have elements)

I personally think the background is fine like that... its nice to see a swathe of fabric otherwise it looks like she is floating in the black.

However the little girl is very out of focus or you had some camera shake going on. Id get her back and take them again before spending a lot of time on the background.
 
You could use the Burn tool, set the exposure at around 10-15% and slowly darken it back to a total black. You could place another layer of black over the top and use Overlay or something, then erase where the subject is. You could just move the Levels slider to clip the blacks but this may negatively affect the subject. There are a whole host of ways to do it, choice between them largely depending on how you prefer to work.

I agree with Janice though, I think it benefits from visibly being a background rather than just flat black.

EDIT: You can carefully place a drop shadow under the subject to remove/minimize the floaty effect. I did above but is very subtle and the internet compression has removed it even more.
