Am i being daft? or do i defo need -20 af? Is it my technique? This is the second d7000 that i have had this issue with so i have my doubts. :(

Personally I can't see the difference between any of 'em !
Not helpful I know...

Where has all this back focus attention come from? I've hardly seen any mention of it over the last year I've had my d7000, but the last two weeks there has been a sudden surge of talk about it.

Those photos look fine to me on my phone, nothing I'd be worrying about.

Is this just another case of the Internet band wagon rolling in?

If your focus point was on the 2 silver crosses then it's +-0 for me.
If you were focussed on the Alphabet Bears text then it's -20 that's sharpest. From what you've said I guess the camera was focussed on the Alphabet Bears text ?

Live view is fractionally sharpest but -20 is very close to live view. -10 less sharp, and 0 is really quite poor... all assuming you were focusing on the text.

I never had these issues with my D7000. Is it just with this lens, or all your lenses?

The -20 is definitely sharper, is this the same lens you were using on your other camera as it may well be that which is out not the body. A quick trip to a Nikon repair centre for body and lens should fix it.

Send them both away for repair just because you're not sure? Seems extravagant. Why not try that lens on another body.. that will be a faster and cheaper way to establish that.

Both lens and body are new units. And i only have the one lens. And no otherbody to try it on.

Lenses can be out when new. Only way is to try a different lens.

Or do the test again properly with the 45 degree ruler set up, this is a poor example of how to test a focus issue and if this is an f/1.8 lens then shoot it f/1.8 which will highlight the problem more than shooting at f/4 will

No it isnt, its a real world test. Who takes photos with a 45 deg setup in real world. Its easy to see when a lens is BF FF when its doing it by that amount, +-5 MA is more difficult and requires the test youre talking about.

Regardless of which method is used ive said before that the inclusion of the mirco AF adjustment on newer bodies is because manufacturers are becoming more and more sloppy in their production and quality checks and are working to larger tolerances and have more or less passed the QC over to the consumer, if people accept this sloppyness it will only get worse.

Ive never personally had to micro adjust a single lens ive owned but if i did get one it would certainally be going straight back for a refund under DSR (I only
ever buy new gear online so im protected by the Distance selling regulations)
and if im not 100% happy why should i tinker around with it when i can just keep sending it back until i get one im happy with.

I maybe wrong but isnt this a recent thing or have people only recently started testing since manufacturers put the micro adjust in cameras, wasnt it just used to be put down to a "soft copy" before.

I dont agree with MA either, the manufacturers do need to work to tighter tolerances. Ive said to the OP already in a different thread if that were my camera/lens theres no way Id keep it. I guess they have to cut corners to pay for R&D and keep the final cost down for consumers.

Just noticed this is the second D7000 hes had an issue with, time to send back im afraid (if not too late), get a full refund and buy from another source hoping they have a different batch

Thanks guys, the first d7000 and 35mm was from wex and the second d7000 and 50mm was from amazon so youd think different batches? Will do a little more testing tonight @ f1.8. Funny thing is i did the ruler test and it was almost spot on then when i focus on something else with same settings then its hit and miss mainly miss?
I emailed amazon and logged the fault so i can send back for a full refund (again) :( why cant it just take sharp infocus pics like my g2 did?

I tested at f4 cos thats the sweet spot for sharpness on the lens i think.

I had a similar problem with my D7000. However on mine the focus wasn't predictable. It wasn't far out but it was never really sharp, sometimes it back focused other times just generally soft.
I took it to Lehmans who diagnosed a faulty mirror, replaced it and setup the camera with one of my lenses. It's now tack sharp with all my lenses and I've now got confidence in it again.

Ok done the ruler test at f1.8.

I think you've done the right thing in contacting amazon to send it back.
Have you thought what you're going to get to replace this one ?

Have you tried with the camera set to only use the centre focus point ?

Do a test like this.

Camera must be square to the box, on a tripod, not too close (say 1.5-2m for that camera/lens) or you may make a correction that will throw it out at normal range.

Use centre-point only at f/1.8, and focus on the box just to the side of the rule, making sure there is no possibility that the AF point can pick up on anything other than the flat face of the box. Repeat a few times to check consistency, de-focsuing each time.

Then check the images to see exactly where the sharpest point of focus falls on the ruler, adjust as necessary.

You dont shoot the ruler, read Hoppy UK's post above.

It is way better to send your d7k to nikon who will pay the carriage and fix it for free - very efficient service.. Mine was turned around in 10 days. Then you know it will work.

I bought from Amazon too.

As a matter of interest, how do you actually arrange to do that?

many thanks in anticipation,#

Phone them up at Nikon uk and they will talk you through what to do and email you the postage label etc. It think it's 0330 123 0932

It's very painless.
