Thanks to the many threads on this forum, I have finally decided to upgrade some of my equipment, now going for a 50d, Canon 10-22, and a Redsnapper tripod. Dilema is what to do with the existing stuff, do many folk find a back up body/gear useful, or will I be so impressed with the upgraded stuff, the 10d may never come out of the bag again?

Only you can decide

If your camera breaks do you wish to wait possibly a few weeks while it gets repaired?

Do you eant to havea seconfd lens mounted ready so you don't lose the shot while changing lens?

Many more reasons.

Depends on what you are shooting, I have several bodies now, and often carry 2 around the zoo/when out, saves changing lens when out in the field, if this is something you don't do often then may be worth moving it on and investing the money in more kit :D

well just bought a 50d myself and still finding my way round it but my 450 will definately not be consigned to the bin or fleabay. i find the 450 a really nice camera for bugging (macro) and as the 50d does not get on well with my sigma macro flash i will continue using the 450 for that.

I've been in two situations where I've suffered catasphropic camera failure and both times I had a backup. One time I dropped my D200 in a lake (:lol:) and the other time my AF packed up mid-shoot just as a Grizzly Bear was standing up on its hind legs in a river...(one of the best shots I never took!) - I just grabbed the backup, and two minutes later, carried on.

Back in the days of film I carried two F5 bodies and an FM2n as back-up.
Now I carry two D3 bodies with a D3x as back-up...go figure...

Back-up bodies: carry one in the hope you'll never need it - because when you do it's already too late.

First DSLR was a D70 which I used in conjunction with my film bodies. Then bought a D200 as an upgrade and kept the D70 and film bodies - used the D70 as a 2nd body rather than a back-up, so I could have 2 lenses ready to use without swapping them; the film bodies (mainly just the F80) were used for extreme wide angles. Late in 2008, shortly before the price rises were announced, I bought a D700. Sold the D200 (since it was worth significantly more than the D70) and kept the D70 for the extra apparent reach with long lenses (more MP than the D700 in Dx mode). As yet, I've never needed the 2nd body as a back-up but it has been handy to have 2 different setups ready for use at a moment's notice - I keep the setup I'm not using at the time on a tripod next to me so I can swap them over without bending down (I'm fat and getting older, so bending's a pain in the back!). Still got the film bodies, although they haven't seen much use since I went FF DSLR.

A backup probably isn't necessary until your main camera breaks, and then it's the most necessary bit of kit you have! Are you going to be in a situation where you need a second body straight away, like in the middle of a paid shoot? Are you likely to bother carrying 2 cameras around with different lenses? (It's a really good idea but I'm too lazy!)

Or put another way, if you sell your 10D what can you buy for the money that would benefit your photography more than having a backup? Personally, I've still got my kit lens in a box somewhere just in case anything happens to my 17-50, or my other half decides to take up togging. Unlikely, but you never know!

Thanks for all the replies. You have already got me thinking of the advantages of having my telephoto attached ready on the older body. I am a bit reluctant to send it to the fleabay market, and this sounds like a good excuse to keep it.

if you get paid then yes you do (I don't own one but I do have access to several will buy at some point)

if you don't its a choice, what is the value of a 10d as a backup body to you vs the value of the cash you get from ebay
