I have been asked to take some portrait pictures of my friends baby......as most of my photography uses zoom or macro I am a bit out of sorts with the portrait side of things hence the question

What does everyone think is the ideal type/focal length/speed etc

Appreciate the feedback and answers

I've used both the 35 1.8 and 50 1.8 to good effect on kids. How old of a baby? What setting for pictures? When my nephew was a newborn it was easy to get him to stay still and get the right composition. Now he is older (15 months) and can run so while still a baby, quite a different beast.

I also like natural light and softer feel so shooting at 1.8 or 2.0 on either lens gives good feel to the photo. Focus needs to be spot on though, thus the question above on movement.

thanks
rick

Thanks for the reply rick

Baby will be 8 months so pretty still.....and will be indoor with the parents.....I already have the 50mm 1.8 and was thinking of that but have also been looking at the 35mm but not sure I need to spend the money or what benefit it would give

50mm will be fine, unless they live in a really tiny house. No need to go for the 35mm
