Evening all,

I took the shot below of my week old niece on Sunday (not perfect but the best of the bunch). I would like to give the new parents a copy of it as a picture, but I'm struggling with the post processing. I think it would ideally lend itself to a nice soft focus effect, and I've got a few CS3 plugins which do exactly that, but I'm struggling to get a result I'm happy with :(

Does anybody fancy having a play with it (I can send the original RAW if needed) and explain what they've done to it?? :)

Dude, you obviously know what you want and where you want the image to be but, I'd be well happy with that and.....well........ leave it ! It's a lovely photo.

:thinking:Maybe thats why you are struggling, it can't be made much better.

Just my opinion :shrug:
 
I agree with doozie,it's a lovely shot. The only thing I have altered here is the colour balance,by choosing "auto" in Lightroom.

Cheers people!! :D To completely change direction, and ignore all your good advice, the missus says that they love selective coloured b+w shots, so I've kept the dummy, and grayscaled the rest - she reckons they'll love it!! :) :)

 
Err, just realised, the dummy has come out orange - why would that be?? I've used a layer mask and the dummy is definitely pink on the original background pic (as per my original)!!

I'm confused (and showing my basic photoshop limitations!!). Loving my £20 Aldi tablet though, it's getting it's first run out :D :D
 
Maybe this.....

Did you use....image / adjust / black + white in CS3 ?

Maybe you moved one of the sliders around in the B+W conversion to change the tones ? Altering the hue of the dummy to orange :thinking:


Looking at it again.............. I liked it better before the edit. The coloured dummy is drawing attention away from the baby and you need to use a soft edged brush or add a little feather to your selection next time(I'm guessing you used a brush though, not a selection) . Sorry me'owd.
 
Hi, its fun to pick the colours out in photos, but I agree its totally not right for this picture and does ruin what could be a lovely emotional shot of a newborn. The best edit is from 'Kiasmum' just making it look nice and natural again, and pinky/blue tones instead of orange. You would find that really easy to do in raw and it would look lovely like that. Also you could try adding a light diffuse glow filter afterwards for a bit of softness and zing to the image. Or just put the whole lot into black and white if you are not sure.

Fair do's. From a critique point of view, it sucks... I agree, but I know they'll love it!! :) I'll give em a copy of the colour one too, in case they want the original! :)
