baby photos - lightning

Hi,
two couples of my friends are expecting babies any day now, so I have thought about taking photos for them as a present.

What lightning would you suggest ?
as that would be newborns, I think using flash is not best idea....but what about soft box above them when they sleep ? so eyes are closed etc ?

daylight is free and generally available during the day time.

I would suggest 'lighting', as 'lightning' tends to kill people!

I've used flash with newborns many a time. Never had a problem, try and keep your light nice and soft for a baby shoot. Natural light is fantastic for them, if you can get enough.

Exactly that.

Flash lighting is fine with newborns btw. Of course, as with any subject, bare flash at full power close to the eyes isn't recommended

Like has been said, a natural light always looks best with babies IMHO.

Flashes sometimes freak parents out more than really newborn babies. You could look into lights that have compact fluorescents into them like the impact octacool lights. They are really soft and easy to work with.
However once they are old enough to move around you will definitely want to move to strobes to stop their movement

natural light is the most pleasing for newborns. A large window light and a reflector
