Hey people,

My wife and I are expecting our first child at end of April (EXCITING!). Whilst she is preparing the colour schemes and making a list of DIY jobs for me to do, I am researching into photos, equipment, techniques, and inspiration in capturing photos of our future new born baby.

Basically looking for advice to what you think I need to purchase, if anything extra? Articles or guides to how to approach this new field of photography.

I have a Nikon D800 with Nikon 50mm 1.4G Lens and am not new to photography, although new to this forum :)

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Apologies, seen a few threads which have already been started. Ignore or at least congratulate me lol Joke

Good luck Tom and all the best to you and the Mrs on the birth of the newbie to the family. You have some great kit there for portraits you shouldn't have any problems.

Yo Tom,
Just to add I would set your ISO to auto (being a D800 n all) and use your 50mm F1.4 at F1.4 - F2.8 ranges. You should capture some really beautiful shots at that narrow DOF and the grain from the D800 shouldn't pose a problem even as high as 6400. Would stay well clear of flash (even bounced) for the new born until young tom's eyes have developed a little :)

Congrats for your babay! I think, your camera is good enough to capture those first moments of your baby. Is it a boy or a girl?

I was in the same boat a few months ago, I used my off camera flash and pointed it at the ceiling or wall.

Congratulations and good luck, I hope your little one likes to sleep at night as much as mine does so far :)

I don't know, but I used our ceiling as my practice object. I hope I don't sound like kids though. And, correct me if I'm wrong, you have your baby too??? I wish to have one soon, but can't find someone to bear, someone to love of course!

It comes from the heart, so when you'll have your baby by your side, you'll know how to take pics, but if course, learn some rules about baby photography. As for the new horizons - take a look at this video of baby pics, maybe you'll find something new :)

Congratulation and treasure the time while they are young, a good tip when young is keep the room warm and shoot after a feed... Then find the biggest window in the house and light the little one up with the best available light you can get. Hope that helps

Tom, congratulations.

I've not done any baby photography commercially, so others may be in a better place to comment, I prefer my subject matter to remain stationary! Any modern camera with a 50mm prime would be more than adequate, so your setup looks great.

At the end of the day you are looking to capture memories, not make test images for the camera club crowd. In 20 years time you won't be worried if the corners were a little soft because you shot wide open or that there's a bit too much of a cyan fringe due to the lighting, or any other trivial thing that we like to convince ourselves is of utmost importance with equipment choices! The only thing that will matter is the moments that you capture, the expression on your son or daughters face, the way the light catches their eyes. Relax and enjoy the process. :)

Congratulations! The only things you'll ever need are: big bean bag, couple of blankets, a few towels and a big-ish window, slap on the 50mm and practice positioning the baby using i dunno a teddy or something before the shoot. Keep your set up simple. Also, you want them done in the first 12 days so no pressure.
