would a softening filter be OK for baby photography portrait, shooting with a flash +softbox set up.

yuck, definately not
take clean photos and adjust in PP if required - you can get some great skin softening actions to help

Yeah agreed. You want to have detail really sharp while smoothing skin without making the baby look like a doll.

Try these actions. All free too. Assuming you can use them with your chosen editing prog.
