A friend wants me to take a few family photos of their newborn(ish), which is fine, but one specific shot request they have I can't think of a way to realise without it looking.... naff.

So what they want is a photo of the parents and baby feet, specifically a photograph of the bottom of their feet. With the babies feet so small (and the baby itself) compared to the parents I can't envisage it looking very pleasing.

Conceptually I find those bottom of baby feet in heart shaped hand formations and the like rather incipid and it's not a style of shot I've ever done.

The only idea I've had is to photograph each pair of feet perhaps in a bed sticking out of the bottom of a bed with white sheet, from a few different angles and present as a storyboard of shots- (in mono/split toned ) as a single shot I'm a bit stumped. I've searched Flickr and I can't see there is anything which really takes my fancy.

Any ideas or comments greatly appreciated.

Parent footprint in the sand, baby foot or foot print in side the parent print?

May work?

Matt

Edit: I know that's not what has been asked btw

Maybe dads bare foot flat on the floor, mums next to his and then baby's (I would prefer to do it so they are sat down with the soles of their feet are to camera)....and very shallow DoF to make the subject pop. Edit: Just looked at link Nattelie posted and that was what I was getting at, BUT, I can't help but think that the baby is too young for the type of shot they are after. It just doesn't look right with newborns (to me anyway). Your idea of a storyboard is MILES better imho :)

thanks guys - i agree the fact the child is so small makes the shot very difficult - if he was a bit older and the difference in foot size less significant, you could do the dangling from a bench, standing together in some funky wellies, footprints in the sand (like matt's idea) or running off into the distance etc and that would work pretty well - i can see a decent photograph in any of those ideas, but the sole of the foot shot as they want is much harder to make look nice i think - it would be easier if the child's feet were bigger but he'll probably only be 8 or 9 weeks old when i photograph him.

my difficulty with this shot is perhaps also not helped by the fact that i think adult bare feet are perhaps the least attractive part of the human form - there are much nicer bits to photograph, imo.

a lot of the pictures in the google search results are pretty much the type of thing i want to avoid - i know some people do like them, but i find it intellectually quite difficult to give somebody a shot like this that i don't believe in myself - i know it probably sounds nuts but most of those feet shots in the google results seem pretty much in the same territory as white vignettes and selective colour - technically the photography in one or two of them is very good, but it's the concept i struggle with.

i'll see what i come up with on the day :-)

Thing is Mark.....what you abhor, they will probably adore :) ...not everyone has a foot phobia :ROFLMAO:

I'm sure you'll be cool, from seeing your other stuff you're good enough....as we say around these parts... "be reet" :)

For me personally I'm not a fan of the style of foot shoots as represented in that link. What is the best way of saying that they look, well erm..........corpse like. Sorry not the best thought I know but thats just how I see that "end on" style shot.
Some great ideas above but as you have already identified the child is too young to do them.

On a slight tangent could you not do something involving standalone shoes of said parents and child. That way you can compose the shot to your hearts content.
