Looking to go to hong kong in october and BA and Virgin are doing a decent ticket at just over £400 each. Ive only ever gone over on Cathay pacific before which was fine, but any seasoned travellers out there recommend one of these over the other?

Nope, both equally good on transatlantic flights.

Do you want to take any camera gear with you? If so the decision is obvious. Virgin Atlantic have one of the most restrictive limits on carry-on baggage amongst all long haul airlines; BA have the most generous.

Personally I find BA cabin crew to be snotty, especially toward non Brits, but that's really the only difference.
(And not so bad in business.)

Edit....have you considered Emirates?

I used to do a fair bit of international travel (business :() and used both regularly, much preferred BA tbh, but would be happy to travel with either.

Never used Virgin for long haul, but have used Emirates and BA. Much preferred BA also if it helps.

I previously used Virgin on long haul (in economy) for work, but now use BA who I think are better now, but as others would be happy with either. Have been BA exclusively now for a few years so not been on a Virgin flight for ages.

Another airline that isn't very photographer-friendly. The carry on allowance is almost as mean as Virgin Atlantic.

Very good point last time that I travelled the tour company used Emirates and I really struggled with their cabin baggage allowance luckily my wife was able to carry some of my gear
This time they are using BA and their allowance is very generous which makes life much easier

I have used both to the USA and not a lot to choose from. I use virgin more as its direct from Manchester

As a long standing executive club member and customer of BA then I fully endorse BA. I actually think their cabin crew and flight crew are fantastic. If there is one aspect of BA travel that irks me is the new system of baggage drop off at Terminal 5; you've checked in online but if you have a case to put in the hold then you can spend up to 20 minutes queuing, it can get quite stressful.

Virgin irk me massively, mainly because of the anti-BA bad blood they have. I used Little Red from time to time to go to Edinburgh and the attitude was prevalent then, BMI had this towards the end but VALR were terrible, I don't know how they could actually mess up a good business model that existed before BMIs demine (virtually full loading on domestic routes) to a situation where although their prices were lower than BA the planes were only half full, but BA would have to put 767s on...

For Hong Kong, don't forget that one flight each way per day (at least ) is in the A380. The other flight I think is 777. Virgin could still be on the 744, unless they are using the A330, A340 or B789.

Another option is CX (Cathay Pacific) last time I was looking I think they have 5 flights a day from LHR and I seem to think they might also either have or be starting flights from MAN soon I think BA has the two daily flights IIRC one of which is on the A380 Which is going to be the most spacious even in Y where as all of CX are 77W
