BA(Hon) in Photography from the OCA

Looks like Gareth is actually the CEO :notworthy: :). So if he does drop by again, he should be able to fill us in with the low-down.

Yes it’s a very good point Chris and something I’m trying to get resolved in the old grey matter. I’ve had a look at the syllabus and read what others have said of the Level 1 (and even leven 2) tasks and it does concern me that I may find it a bit, er, unengaging / unchallenging at least at the beginning. Why pay £500+ per module for that?

However without the Level 1 credits I wouldn’t get the BA and if I started this I would want to take it through to the end. Whilst this is not to support the pursuit of a career in photography (I enjoy the luxury of being an experienced amateur – something which should not be undervalued) I am also not just doing it just for fun or as a makey-learny ‘get-me-started-in-photography’ type course.

So each level / module is approx £500?

Yes, each module ..... this is in line with, and a direct comparison to, the OU model.

I'm definitely going for it but just need to work out whether to start at base camp & progress or explore the potential/possibility of using the APEL route.

@ Big Ant .... just seen that you are in Mold, N. Wales. I have close family there, My Sister-I-L lives in Llys Nercwys after may years in Cilcain village. I also married a St. Asaph girl ..... small world :)

Hi... been lurking for a while to get a feel for the forum... and came across this thread.

Delurk = on! :)

My interest is piqued by this OCA course. One thing I have missed, or have not understood completely, is how long you have to take a course.

Let me explain:

The website say it takes a year to do a course. Fair enough... but what happens if I find it easy, or have more time available, and i zip through it in 9 months? Now assuming I would like to work towards a degree, and get the course assessed, do I have to wait until the end of the full year to get it assessed. Like an exam at a set time? And what happens, if I find it difficult for whatever reason, or do not have enough time to do it in a year, but require 18 months, is it still possible to do, and get it assessed?

Aye, I know. Lots of questions... but I am not familiar with how these things work generally.

Cheers,
Kev. (Geneva, Switzerland)

Just a follow up on query above, in case anyone else had the same question... I called the OCA to ask a few questions. Calling a toll free number from outside the UK can be a challenge, hence me asking here, and not calling them directly. (Why didn't I just email? Idjeet.)

Anyway...

If you are going to have the course assessed, you need to complete it within 2 years. So said the man on the phone. :) He also said, if you find you have loads of time, you can complete it earlier. The 12 month is the guidline... and the average most students take to complete the course.

Sounds good, no? Also, if you are an European overseas student, there is a suplemental charge of £60 to cover courier expenses. £100 for the rest of the world.

When the summer hols are over... and the crazy work hours calm down, I'll probably be signing up - in September / October. Back to school for me.... :geek:

Save your money and do a small-business course instead: available from most local tech colleges - you can learn almost everything about light and composition from books at a fraction of the cost...
Where Photography courses really score is in meeting people - networking - and the course needs to be in the right location for that - LCP and Sheffield are the best for Photo-Journalism-based, but Bournemouth and Brighton also offer good courses...
