Hi,
It's my mum and dad's golden wedding and I would like to convert their B&W wedding photo to colour. Is this possible, if so is it expensive and does anyone know an online site that would do it?
Unfortunately, this can only be done by hand and it's a labour intensive difficult process. The good news is that better results can be obtained this way (digitally) than the traditional method of air brushing on the actual print.
The only thing I'd say is that some prints lend themselves better to the process than others - not all mono prints are really suitable. I used to do a lot of photo retouching work for the trade and as far as I know I was the only person offering a hand colouring service.
I'd be happy to have a look at the print for you and give you an opinion and a price if you like. I'm pretty well retired now, so I'm not trying to drum up trade.
Only real way to do this would be "paint" the colour back in Photoshop. Could take a while but you just have to make sure the colours are real looking.
I must have done this about 10 years ago. The guy had been turned away by a couple of photo restorers including a well known processing house. I really should have turned him away too but it was the only photo he had left of his father and he talked me into it. It's not the best example in the world. Given the amount of damage on the image and the age of the photo it was important to try to keep the colours restrained.
I just look at it today and know I could have done a better job now, but that's life I suppose.
