B&W Printing

Hi

Does anyone have any experience of high quality print co's for B&W images?

I've used Ilford and their images are excellent but a little pricey, plus it REALLY bugs me that they roll even the smaller sizes.

DSCL?

I actually got 2 10x8s done of the same image. One at Ilford and one at DSCL. Took them into college and gave them the pepsi challenge to the folks there.

I'd say around half reckoned the DSCL prints were better than the Ilford ones, and once people found out the costs of DSCL vs Ilford, it became a no brainer.

If you're selling your prints, I'd say send the same image for printing at different labs to see how they come out.

DSCL prints were sharper than Ilford, and even though I presume they were done on a colour printer, there was no discernable colour cast.

However, personally I preferred the Ilford prints as that softer print feel worked better with my images than the DSCL "perfect" prints.

Certainly worth a try for the small sums involved.

Thanks Ian, thats useful info. I have used DSCL for colour and been very pleased with the results.

Have you by any chance tried printing B&W on their pearl paper? I cant imagine it really works but am just curious.
