My 13 year old German Shepherd had a fit an hour ago....never happened before. I manged to bundle her into the car and she's now sedated and at the vet's, where he's going to carry out tests, but for now she has to stay there. She was so glassy-eyed when I left. I cannot even conceive of her not being here.

Thank you Phil. All of my usual bravado has abandoned me.

That's terrible. Hopefully everything will be okay.

That sucks, my grandparents had GS and they used to have fits. I always thought they were prone to them?

Possibly, I don't know....not my girl though.

Sad to hear Ruth, I know how you feel as our Lurcher developed epilispy a while ago, it's a truely awful thing to watch but remember the dog knows nothing of what's happening and is no pain. I'm sure the vets will do a great job, it could well be just a one off as dogs only usually develop it between 2 and 5 years old.
Hoping things go well...be positive

Just to add if it's any help, ours was a bit wobbly and anxious for an hour or so after but made a full recovery and within a few hours you'd never know it happened

Hope she's soon up and well Ruth.

Many years ago, we had an Irish Setter who developed epilepsy after an RTA. Once her meds were sorted, the fits were few and far between and she had a long and happy life. Your vet will be able to give advice on how to deal with her when she's fitting.

Amber used to emerge from her rare fits wondering what was going on - but that wasn't unusual for her before the accident!

Aww that's a shame Ruth, sorry to hear of this. Hope she pulls through.

Being glassy eyed could be down to the sedation.

I had a lab that had 2 fits when young (shocking thing to deal with if you have never experienced it before). Blood test revealed a liver infection which was easily dealt with. Could be other things such as epilepsy.
Hopefully it will be treatable with medication.

All the best for your dog and you.

So sorry to hear that Ruth. All we can hope is that she didn't suffer much.

I'm sure another friend will be along when you're ready and that he/she will be much loved - not as a replacement but in his/her own right.

Awww sorry to hear that Ruth
It's a good age for a GSD, I lost my last one to heart failure at that age, fine one day and the next he was gone, vet could do nothing for him so I let him go :(
Remember the good times

Very sorry to hear that Ruth. We are on our second GSD, we lost our first after a tumor aged 10 and our current girl is not to good and she's only just turned 10. Can you post some pictures of her please.

Thank you all. Ingrid, yes, yesterday....even this afternoon she was fine. I'm struggling to get my head around it.

Foggy this was my old girl

Thanks Ruth she looks lovely, I can't say how much I love this breed and their character, we picked up our first the same day we moved into our first and current home.

Really sorry to hear of your news :(

Having lost our 18 month old border collie to epilepsy in August last year I feel your pain.

Aww, what a gorgeous creature she was!

I've lost 2 German Shepherds so I know exactly how it feels and it's not easy, in fact I'm a bit tearful reading this as it's bringing back memories of my 2 big balls of fur which I still miss dearly, German Shepherds are truly amazing animals and they leave enormous gaps in your life when they're gone. I wish I could say something to make the loss easier but unfortunately I can't, it just takes time to let the change in your life settle in and eventually your feelings of loss will largely be replaced by warm feelings of happiness you had together when she was around. :)

I'm soo sooo sorry to hear this :( I totally know how you feel, my baby cat passed away only Thursday. The pain is indescribable. R.I.P Doglett :'(

awww , sorry to hear that Ruth

coming suddenly is a git in some ways because you have no time to prepare yourself , but on the otherhand at least she didnt suffer.

just try to remember the good times. :hug2:

I'm sorry for your loss. I've loved and lost a few German Shepherds over the years, it doesn't get any easier with numbers, but the pain does fade over time.

Very sorry to hear of your sad loss - you might find the following poem of some comfort.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Really sorry , I know how you feel we had to have our moggie put to sleep yesterday , she was very elderly and had a good life but its still not easy

I really am not a dog person BUT - I am sat here with blurry eyes and my heart goes out to you, people that don't have pets don't realise that they are a huge part of the family.

Rest in peace!

.DAVID.

Heartbreaking, to most people loosing a dog is like loosing one of the family. I have lost a couple over the years & vow that will be the last, at present we have a lovely 7 year old labrador & love her dearly, you have my sympathies.

Have to add my condolences as well being a dog lover and owner for more that 40 years.

Thinking of you

Realspeed
