I was until yesterday running avg free 8.5. When I logged onto my computer I got a security warning and found the Resident shield was inactive. I tried all the links on the avg programme but could not activate the shield.
I've now downloaded avg free 9.0 but the resident shield is still inactive and can't get it to activate.
Anyone with any ideas?

I have to agree with Neil, AVG has a habit of letting nasties though.

Avast or Avira AntiVir are a couple of good free anti virus programs

If you go for Avira AntiVir on the page I linked then scroll down slightly on the page for the download link (do not click on Google ad sponsored programs at the top of the download page)

AVG has went too bloated over the last year or so.

Avast is fine as long as you don't use it on high settings, otherwise your CPU will never stop!

Cheers, I've opted for avast.
No security warnings popping up any more.

I'd run avg free for years with no problems until yesterday.

have you not had teh info re after a set date 8.5 was not going to be supported? I got then Forget what date now but as soone as I got it I updated to 9

avg 9 was a PITA to install for me, ive used it for years and not had too much of an issue with it, but might look at other things now

Ive been using COMODO for the last month, seems like a solid option

AVG antivirus and Comodo firewall for the last 3 or 4 years until recently then a few weeks ago Comodo stopped letting me run Adobe programmes  So I've ditched Comodo and now use Kerio FW (or Sunbelt Personal Firewall as it's now called). I also use Spybot S&D and Adaware and so far I seem virus free.....famous last words:D

Thought this review of anti virus software by http://www.av-comparatives.org/ might interest some of you (:
