Average clicks?

Sorry if this has been posted before. If I were to buy a second hand camera, approximately a year old, what would the average ish clicks be? What would be considered too many, if that's possible?

Can't say an exact number but it's a bit like buying a second hand car.

Do you buy 1 year old car with high mileage but well maintained or do you buy a 1 year old car with low mileage but it has been absolutely ragged!
Even then both are prone to failure. The same principle applies to cameras.

A well maintained camera with a high click count can be an attractive purchase still.

For me personally I would want something no more than 10,000 clicks if it's only a year old.
 
It's all just hype, cameras, like cars, can fail at very low mileages or go on for ever. People fret about buying something that is rated to 100,000 shots when it has, say 25k on it, but if you only take 100 shots a week then it would take you 14 years to reach the "limit"....
 
Thank you. I have an offer from one of my clients for a very, very cheap 5d mk2, but I want to be sure I have all my information before going to see it this afternoon.

5D2 is rated at 150k clicks. If it's a year old and has substantially more than 10k clicks, it will be showing signs of being used.

It has 12k clicks and they want £800 for it!
 
The price seems fair (not that I've researched the market for second hand 5D2s) but what do you want to shoot with it? Most cameras tend to have strengths and weaknesses, so be sure the 5D2's strengths match your own needs.

And to put another perspective on it, what can a 5D2 do for you that your current camera cannot?

Or to put another perspective on it, £800 might buy you a second hand 100-400. Which would be of more use to you - the camera or the lens?
 
I just thought the price was attractive Tim, and it may give me something to trade for a 7d/100-400 which is what I really want.
 
At £800 for a low count body like that it's a bargain. Are you sure it's a 5D2 though and not just a 5D.


Interested to know why you need a 7D if your buying a 5D2 ?

I've tried the 7d Chris, and I've decided that's what I'd like. This 5d I've been offered (They've said it's the mk2) is cheap so I might be able to get a good trade on a 7d with it :) make sense no?
 
Sounds like an absolute bargain if it's a mk2. Perhaps a second camera is needed because she photographs weddings etc. Shooting something like that with only one camera would be nuts!
 
Yup £800 is a bargain for a mk2. They are between £1100 and £1300 depending on age, clicks and conditions. If I hadn't just bought a 7D I might have been interested if you wanted to pass it on...

Try playing with it (assuming you've got some EF lenses). You never know, you might like it (IMHO, it takes better pics than the 7D with the same lens but doesn't have that autofocus loveliness the 7D has).

If you can turn it for a profit then fair play. :)

It would be a great camera for weddings, portrait and landscape work, and things that sit still, but probably not the first choice for distant/tiny wildlife, BIF, motorsport and other action scenarios. Its trump card is IQ from that large sensor. In every other department, IMHO, it is beaten by the 7D in terms of features and performance.

I didn't get it. it was a bit of a mess and didn't want to risk it :( I guess when they say 'it's too good to be true' it really is...never mind!
 
It was just over a year old, had a big deep scuff on the bottom right hand corner, so I think it had been dropped. It showed an error 80? I have no idea what that is, and I wasn't told that before going to see it. I don't know much about cameras, but I don't want to part with nearly £1k and find I've got a duff camera, even it's cheap. :'(
I'll keep looking, thanks for the advice though :)

Think you did right there.

7D would be my choice for motorsport anyway.

From a quick Google search, it seems to be often related to bad CF cards, bent pins on the CF slot or a failing battery grip.

I wouldn't have risked it.
 
It didn't have a grip, so I guess it was one of those other things. I didn't want to risk it either! Not with a heavy bash to the bottom of it too.
 
You made the right choice, there will be another bargin along at some point.

You could allways switch to nikon ;)
