Hi, if i install the software mentioned above, do i need toinstall anything else for protection, i have had Norton on, and its about to expire, so i am thinking about the free version of Avast, but a little unsure, so what do you guys think

Avast Free has a good reputation, but Windows Defender (also free if you are on Windows)is regarded 'in the trade' as being as good as any of the anti-virus applications.

I just changed from Microsoft Security Essentials to Avast and it found a couple of issues that Security Essentials had missed, overall Avast seems a good choice with more options, my only niggle is the little pop ups in the bottom right corner that ask if you want to upgrade, easy enough to ignore or click on the cross to remove though. I use Windows 7 firewall with Avast.

Avast + Comodo firewall (free edition) covers live security requirements and then follow that up with scans using Malwarebytes from time to time.

Avast will do fine along with Windows own firewall.

Mind and uninstall Norton first though.

I find Avast to be a very good anti-virus piece of software. The pop-ups and requests to upgrade are all a small price to pay for what is a free piece of kit

I use exactly the same combination and (fingers crossed) never had a problem even when it's picked up a potential issue.

I use the paid for version of Avast after using the free version for a while and it seems to be doing a better job than anything I've used in passed (Norton/McAffee - slow, slow, slow; or the other free one I've forgotten the name of that used to be great and then went all bloatware).

Ok thank you everyone, the avast looks like the winner then, will uninstall the Norton thoroughly, I guess I may have to run a cleaner to completely get rid of it.
Thanks to everyone for helping me out.

If you bank with barclays Karpasky is free. Its one of the best. So far so good.

I have now got rid of Norton, i have installed the zone alarm firewall, and the free avast antivirus, can i uninstall windows defender or is this a bad idea? when i start up my computer something sounds like it is still scanning.

Also worth noting that Barclays customers can download the full version of Kaspersky Internet Security for free.

This is more like Norton, giving you Anti-Virus and other internet security tools like detecting dodgy websites. It is highly rated on most reviews of paid for security software so an excellent deal at Free.

There is an independent review here: http://uk.pcmag.com/security-reviews/34300/review/kaspersky-internet-security-2015

It was good. It is now as useful as a guard dog with no eyes, ears or nose.

It's detection rate is well below the rest.

Just turn it off.
Go to 'start' and type defender in the search box to find it easily.
