hi all, when shooting in av mode,
ive noticed that the shutter speed only moves when you set a f number, do these work together, or can you set them both separately.
sorry for been a numpty,

In Av mode you set the aperture and the camera will set the speed and ISO to give correct exposure. If you want to control both switch to manual mode M. Be wary though because Canon cameras will still set the ISO based on your choice of aperture and shutter speed for full manual you will need to fix the ISO as well. The three things, aperture, shutter speed and ISO control the exposure. Look up "exposure triangle" for more info. (Apologies if you know all this already!)

This will only happen if you ahve a camera capable of AUTO ISO and it probably wont be default even if you have... when you set M then you will be setting them all..

Hi I use AV almost all the time on my Canon 550D and 7D , yes the shutter speed varies as you alter the av
All you need to do is set the aperture that you want then increase the ISO to get the shutter speed high enough :)
The ISO will only vary automatically in auto iso mode

I don't know why you assumed auto ISO being set. But I really don't advise it as a default position. It's easier for those who shoot or shot film, but you can set your ISO with virtually no thought, just aim for a slow as possible, there's no photographic 'side effect' unlike AV or aperture which can be selected for an artistic reason.

In AV mode you choose the Aperture and the camera calculates the shutter speed.

Tv- you choose shutter speed, the camera chooses aperture

Manual - You choose both

P - Camera chooses both (a bit like the green box) but you can adjust either shutter or aperture and the camera alters the other accordingly.

With regards to ISO, you can either choose yourself or let the camera do it
