Hi all, quick question:
I'm interested in the D810 as it has a built in autofocus motor and my current camera doesn't. Basically I want to know if I can buy cheaper lenses (like Sigma) and use the autofocus feature with lenses that don't have the motor built in to them.
Is there only certain types of lenses I can use it with? If so, what acronyms am I looking out for?
 
If it is a F mount lens with the screw drive autofocus it should work.

Some of the earlier Sigma lenses are not as good build quality as their early Nikon equivalents, so be careful what you buy. The Nikon AF and D lenses are generally very good, but you might find that a D810 makes them look a bit soft if you go pixel peeping. All the lenses from this period do this (they just are not as sharp as more modern lenses) but only photographers will notice/care on pictures, and then when they are printed big.
 
Having owned a D810 in the dim and distant past I would caution against purchasing anything but the best lenses you can afford. The 36 mega-pixels in the D810 require lenses capable of resolving to that level and older/cheaper Nikon, Sigma, etc., lenses will leave you disappointed. Get the right combination and you will love the results (y)

The D810 will work with pretty much any F-mount Nikon lens. Pages 419 & 420 of the user manual (downloadable here -https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/products/176/D810.html) lists the compatible Nikon lenses.

You will also need to practice your hand holding technique as even the slightest movement when pressing the shutter can result in a blurred image - it is unforgiving - and that was the reason I sold mine and bought a D750. My keeper rate went up by quite notably (y)
