Hi all,

I recently took a few photos for a 6-a-side league and have ended up with quite a few OOF unfortunately. Just wondering if people who normally shoot football use manual or auto focus and any other tips you could give me?

Thanks, Rosso

Auto focus 100% of the time. I'm still learning, so hopefully some of the more experienced guys will post some tips for you that will have more credibility than my tips would

Auto but use af-c so focus will keep tracking, shutter to multi release as well. You will always get some oof though, just hopefully less and less as you get better.

Make sure that your AF point selection is set to single point rather than auto selection.

for fast moving objects.. people.. it has to be auto focus, you don't stand a chance in manual mode...

So what did sports photographers do before AF ?

Not impossible but it is significantly more challenging.

Well, that seems like a fairly general consensus then! I'll make sure I'm on AF next time then! Cheers for the help guys :)

But there's no comparison between focussing with a proper old manual focus camera with a split prism bright viewfinder and a modern dslr, particularly crop, particularly entry level (pentamirror).

Nonsense. I have only ever done it with manual.

I wouldn't want to manually focus an AF lens on a new body though. A Nikon F and a pre-AI lens will do for me.

Steve.

Phil, nobody specified the type of kit. However I have to agree with you.

I had to shoot a game at Featherstone about 5 years ago with a borrowed D2H and a 300mm AI lens, i got about 8 in focus all game and most of those were crap action shots as i pre focussed and just fired away and just hoped for some sort of action

It's auto not manual and seriosuly.. don't worry about getting some OOF ...Good grief happens to everyone..

What did people do before auto? seriously?.. what did they do before the wheel... .. We have auto focus.. use it :)

Yes.I wish that DSLRs were as good but they are not,BUT for sport it is auto focus all the way.It is a shame that DSLRs are designed for auto focus first and manual second. It is one of the reasons I wish I had gone Canon(split screens) rather than Nikon.:gag:
