Do many of you use the AUTO ISO feature on your canon/nikons?

I find that ISO is something that I change a lot, along with the aperture and shutter speed.. Im not sure Id feel right just leaving it at auto.

Or do you find it best to ensure you dont have a major c***-up with the wrong ISO?

Although I usually use manual.... and this keeps it on one setting, so there doesnt seem much point in me using it.


And also,,, do we all pronounce it as letters, I.S.O. or as a word.. iso?
 
I use it as iso most of the time and dont use the auto option at all cause i like to have the control of how grainy my photos are going to be. Sometimes i cranck the iso up on purpose to get a grainy effect especially when shooting in b+w or intending to convert afterwards. But most of the time i leave it on the lowest setting (100 in my case) and just change it when there is need.

"International Standards Organisation" I believe.

I don't use auto ISO but I can see the benefits in some situations.
 
I'm an I, S, O, but I've heard a few eyeso mutterings on occasion.

I like to stay firmly in control of the ISO because of the possible negative impact on image quality. This is probably a view point that, to a degree, technology has superseded, but its good to bear in mind that ISO 50 with give the highest dynamic range for Canonites and ISO 400 is pushing the upper limit of acceptable native noise.

I have always called it I.S.O. as I knew it stood for something! Its just that ive seen a few videos online and the photographers (american) usually say iso as a word.
 
I don't think I can have it set to Auto when using Aperture Priority :thinking: Either way, I would keep it as manual. Though I must stop forgetting to dial it back down if it's been at 1600 or somesuch.

For photography I've always said I.S.O. but when I was fleetingly an ISO auditor at my last job it was 'eyeso'. Dunno ...:bonk:
 
Havent used it for a long time, though with modern cameras, it can be used just to get an idea to then work from manually if using for instance, shutter priority and your not sure your light is enough for the shutter speed you need, but definately only as a guide or starting point. I think once you have been using a camera for some time, you get a 'feel' for the right sort of ISO in any given circumstance anyway. Yes, I am an I S O person, not an eyeso.
 
When I started out, mine was definitely on auto ISO on aperture priority on my D70s. After taking hundreds of shots on holiday and coming back with some really grainy shots that I was very disappointed with, I have since turned to manual ISO.

As my equipment has improved over time, I still am on manual, but have more confidence that the camera will cope better with a higher ISO if I need to crank it up.
 
Always use it on manual. Did try Auto at one point but it always seemed to get it wrong. Also have to remember to change it back though. Used 1600 to do some indoor non-flash once, got distracted and went outside to do some shots on a very bright sunny day. Didn't look at them until I got home, Yeuch!

I think the Americans tend to use Iso as one word, we tend to use it as initials.
 
Well Im glad Im doing the same as most of you.

It was only that the auto ISO was a new feature that I was intrigued..... but on thinking more deeply I thought Id be best with what I was already doing.

No idea if I even have an auto ISO setting. :shrug:
I would certainly never use it.

And.... I.S.O. here..... even ASA on the odd occasion. ;)
 
Not seen an auto ISO on the 350D, so it's fully manual for me, which has it's good and bad points.
Good points - i'm in control
Bad points - forgetting to switch back to 100 after using 1600 in low light the night before !

Oh and is eyeso from me as well. :D

I reckon CT probably has a little DIN to ISO conversion chart in his kit bag. ;):D
 
Always use it in manual, and always set it back to 100 after a shoot. I've always called it eyeso and so have all the other photographers I know, strange really because we all said A-S-A before so don't know why we use the acronym now. :thinking:

Just seen milestones's post and checked my 350D, no auto ISO, so that's why I use manual too. Doh!
 
I tried auto I.S.O. a few times at the MK meet as it was a new "gimic" for me on the 40D. I didn't notice any differance in quality from the full manual shots though the camera did tend to crank it up to 400 - 800 when 200 would have sufficed
 
Auto iso is very useful in some situations. I photograph a few motorcycle events, trials and enduro's, that are often held in woodland, the light can change a lot from a bike going through a clearing, to one on a dark track overgrown with trees,
During the event I walk around the course, as I don't know when or where I will see the bikes, and I do not have time to change the settings, I set my 40d to shutter priority and auto iso, so the camera is always ready for the shot.
For normal day to day use I mainly leave it on iso 200, changing manually if I have to.

No - I'm even sadder than that, I can still remember how IS0 equates to to ASA/ISO.

There should be tap on your head so you can just dump this info. :D
