Auto focusing issues on Nikon

So my Nikon d60 with 18-55mm nikkor kit lens has had an auto focusing problem for a while now. Whereby it just wouldn't focus, whilst it continuously tried to making creaking noises. Due to the fact that the d60 has no in built auto-focusing motor I decided it must be the lens, so I replaced that with a new kit lens. However now, with any lens at all, it doesn't even seem to try to focus; i press the shutter and the camera just doesn't react, although it does in manual focus- which is no use to me doing the nightlife photography I do. (I have tried the camera in daylight too of course, but auto focus is not working whatsoever) I've tried so many different settings to try to make it work- focus mode, af-area mode, in the auto setting, etc. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem or can help me try to fix it with settings I wasn't aware of or anything, or whether I will need to pay for it to be repaired.

Any suggestions would be really appreciated, I would really like to get it sorted! No negative or critical comments about using auto rather than manual please.. Photographing in a dark club with no live-view, just a view finder, it is incredibly hard to get images perfectly crisp.

Have you considered getting it fixed? That should do the trick.

Yeah, what I'm saying is.. My camera will only work when the lens is switched to M - manual. When I switch it to Auto on the lens, it doesn't react when the shutter is pressed. I was just curious if I'm missing something more complicated, like maybe a setting has to be applied for auto focus to work?

Sounds knackered but try cleaning the lens contacts on the lens and on the body. A pencil rubber works well. Failing that, a trip to Nikon.

Yes does sound like a trip to Nikon :(.

Their a great little lens, but the motor have a habit of going.

I don't think there are any Nikon stores around.. Do Jessops do fixing? I don't think it's an issue with the auto focusing motor because I replaced that lens, and the d60 has no inbuilt af motor. A pencil rubber, really!? Sounds like that'd create a lot of smudges..

Im not 100% certain, but isnt there a menu setting for this? Where you can pick AF-S, AF-C etc etc.....Is it set on manual? If this was the case, it wouldnt matter how you had the switch on the lens...

Might worth resetting the camera to default incase you have accidently changed something.

Oh my days.... Just reset it and it's working perfectly. That's actually ridiculous! I knew it would be something really obvious in the settings which I was just missing, I feel so stupid to not have thought of that! Thanks for the help everyone. Shame I don't know what setting actually needed adjusting but oh well, I am just so pleased :)

Glad its sorted. Would be good to know what chamged, but at least its working.
Could have been what Nick said above, or maybe you somehow enabled back button focus and took focus away from the shutter button.

No I did play around with the focus mode (AF-S/AF-C/AF-A) so don't think it was that. What's back button focus?

"Deep down" in the menus? What do you mean exactly?

I dont think there is a MF option "deep down", Only whats already been mentioned.
The d60 menu isnt exactly "deep" anyway.

Not criticising it at all, it's a great camera.
I'm just saying the menu structure is pretty basic and shallow compared to say the d700. Even that doesn't have particularly deep menus. Pretty much everything is on a top level in a certain menu bank. Very rare I can't find a menu item just by scrolling the top level items.

hi beth
do you not have a user manual for your d60 ? well worth getting one , it will cover all the setting and let you know how to re-set back to factory settings.

See post 11 ;-)

So I gather that the Nikon d60's kit lens' af motor inside wears down quite quickly.. Can anyone recommend a similarly priced Nikon or canon with an in built auto focusing motor? Does the Nikon d70 or d90 have an af motor built inside, for instance?

All Nikon lenses with AF-S in the name have built in focus motors. For Sigma lenses it is HSM. I would rather just replace the lens than change the camera if the lens is indeed faulty. I have a 6+ year old 18-55 AF-S lens (non VR) that still works perfectly, and it has been used a lot, so to say that they wear out quickly is not true in general.

Both the Nikon D70 and D90 have in body focus motors, but if you put a lens with a built in focus motor on a Nikon body that has an in body focus motor, the focus motor in the lens will be used and the in body focus motor is disabled. Therefore a lens with a faulty focus motor will still not focus on a body with built in focus motor.

Other lower end Nikon bodies with focus motor are D50 and D80.
