Hey everyone

Was wondering if you could help me please. Yesterday I recieved my D40x, and im finding it brilliant, however when I was using it today, I was manually focusing instead of automatic. Now when the put the camera in auto mode with the focus on auto, it doesnt seem to focus, without me changing it to manual and focusing it myself. Any suggestions on why this is? Im sorry if its stupid and simple, im new to this whole camera world.

Hi Amy, before you put it to manual focus, did it work with auto, i don't really know much about Nikon camera's, hope you get it sorted.

Yep, was auto focusing fine both yesterday and today, so dont really know whats up.

Is it trying to focus? Is the area you want to focus on the same as the area displayed/selected for focus by your camera? Are you too close to the subject or do you have too much zoom for say a close subject?

Not sure about the workings of a Nikon but these have been my main issues with auto focus.

What lens are you using?

You could try removing the battery for a short while - this may have the effect of hard resetting the camera (I don't know Nikons well enough to know if there is a small battery backup).

My guess is that there is a chance the AF motor in the lens has packed up - are you on AF mode on both the body AND the lens?*

Cheers,
James

* Again, don't know Nikons - there may or may not a switch on the body itself in addition to the lens.

Im using a Nikon 18mm-55mm 1:3.5-5.6GII ED on a D40x. I dont know anything about the camera and am just beginning to learn so I doubt that is helping. I'll give it a go about taking the battery out and leaving it for a while and see what that does. It doesnt seem to try and focus at all when it all the way out, or zoomed right in or mid way.

Now I come to think of it, I do have another lens, a 55mm - 200mm, will put that on and see what happens.

Amy,

Deffo try the other lens - that will rule out the motor issue (as your camera requires lenses with their own AF motors, there isn't one in the body). If it still doesn't work, then look for a setting in the menu that says something along the lines of 'Reset to defaults' which will effectively return all settings to factory defaults.

After that, it might be worth dropping into a good camera shop and getting them to check.

Cheers,
James
