hello, a quick one, when using my sony a200 on aperature mode my camera does not seem to focus?

on auto setting (i dont use that but tried it to see) it auto focus's on whati need,

but if i change to the other mode then it doesnt, just stays blurred when i change the zoom.

have i inadvertantly changed some setting to prevent this?

any ideas what im doing wrong?

I am a bit confused when you say it 'stays blurred when you change the zoom', zoom and focus are 2 different things.

To clarify a few things.

1/ In Auto, when you half press the shutter button, it focuses and you get the confirmation beep.
2/ You change it to A and it will not focus. Have you tried the same in S mode ?

to explain more, when in auto the camera focuses when you half press the shoot button.

when i change to aperature or manual mode it doesnt, so if i then go an adjust my lens so it is not as zoomed in, the camera is not focusing.

im pretty sure it used to before, so im not sure why it is not now?

does that make sense?

i hope someone knows, cos i had to shoot in auto the other day because i cant get it to focus in the other modes :(

I have an a200 mate and use it in aperture mode most of the time. No problems here.
What focus mode do you have it in?

when you use it in aperature does the camera autofocus on what you want?

i just tried on M & A mode pressing the Fn button and then changing the autofocus settings and it doesnt change anything, for example i zoomed right in on a cup and it did not focus on it :(

bought from jessops in town. im having a read of the manual, it does seem that it is onyl auto focusing in auto mode :(

it take it those of you with the a200 have it focusing in the other modes too?

lol yes it is official i am a fud :D PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!!!

Looked up "autofocus" in the manual and basically the first line of page 67 says to "set the focus mode to auto focus" and has a nice little picture of a sliding button on the front of my camera beside where the lens attached.

So i look at my camera and low and behold it has been moved to MF (manual focus i assume) so i slide it back to AF and it works again!

quick check and it is now focusing again on all moded! woot woot!

I didnt even know that slider was there! must have accidently moved it!

Thanks for everyones help, learning curve :D

I don't know of any camera that would only autofocus in Auto mode. I think you need to take it back to Jessops and show them.

Know how you feel mate

Done something similar on my bike, spent 10 minutes trying to start it before i noticed the kill switch was on :bonk:

Enjoy the camera mate.

You learn something new every day.

I did not realise that Auto mode overrides the MF / AF switch.

**** I thought you'd found a glitch in the A200 my stomach turned somersaults having just purchased one lol

nope just me being a noob!

Sammy. I don't think so.

If you had opened this thread with auto focus is not working in any modes. You would have had a dozen replies telling you to check the MF / AF switch.

I certainly did not think to mention this as you did have it working in Auto mode.

I would be interested to know if other makes do the same.

Have just checked the A100 and, if the switch on the front is set to MF, then the camera remains on MF whichever mode is set. On the A700 it's a little more complicated. If the switch at the front is set to MF and the dial on the camera is turned to Auto, the focus mode changes to AF-A, which can then be overwritten by the AF/MF button on the back of the camera. When you change to another mode it reverts to MF. Clear? I shall be testing you later. :D
