Thinking of organising a visit to Scotland during the October mid-term break to see the Aurora. Does anyone know of a good place to stay with a reasonable chance of seeing something?
It may be obvious but there is nowhere especially good if you don't get clear skies. It would be fair to say that the north east of Scotland has a better chance of seeing these clear skies than the north/west, but the lack of light pollution to the north and west means that you have an ideal vantage point there if the weather is with you.
If are prepared for a fruitless week regardless, then book somewhere remote near John'o'Groats. However, if you want to do more than 'possibly' catch an Aurora, then there is little else to do up there for a whole week.
If it were me, and I only wanted an Aurora, I'd play it by ear and watch the forecast with an eye to move to different areas depending upon conditions. There is no specific place to be guaranteed seeing an aurora, as it's just like asking where can you see a rainbow!
I lived in the Shetland Isles for several years.. this is the place to go. Allbeit there a ferry fare to cover, if its not right for the Aurora there plenty more to photograph. Stunning place
