Yes
There was a X class solar flare earlier this evening with a probable Earth directed CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) this should reach us on Saturday. It will hopefully cause an aurora that will be visible from the North and maybe even further South, so if you have clear skies it may be worth keeping an eye open.
Typical for me I'm off to Southampton for the weekend so not much hope for show there. :(

I wonder how far south? The north coast of northern ireland? Will look into this further, would love a chabce to see this. Cheers Andy.

I think it's due Friday? www.aurora-service.eu/aurora-forecast/

Also unfortunately will be dawn when strongest by looks of things. Will venture out early doors anyway just in case as I'm in Sweden in the middle of nowhere.

You are right but there are two CMEs on the way. the second bigger one should be on Saturday (hopefully). More info here http://spaceweather.com/

I do like that site you have linked to, lots of good info there, I'll add that to favorites thanks.

Just taken a closer look at the site you linked to and it looks like early Sat morning it will hit with a strength of around KP7.

Excellent, cheers! Kp7 is all the way down to Germany!! Fingers crossed the light cloud forecast here clears! Saw them here in Gothenburg when only Kp5 so fingers crossed!

Also, am I remembering correctly that it is always NE you look?

Hi just out of interest does anyone know a rough time saturday morning that you would be able to see it as I would need to drive for about 1 1/2 hours to get somewhere with little to no light pollution.

From what I've read it's at it's peak between midnight and 3am - someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though.

The weather forecast is not amazing for the Scottish highlands. I hope it is not too bad though... As usual grey cloud or super slow pensioners eat all the good sights.

Central belt (at least over here in the West) looks ok for Saturday morning though... according to MetCheck?

The norwegian site is usually on the optimistic side and their forecast is a bit meh http://www.yr.no/place/United_Kingdom/Scotland/Glasgow/
I'd want full clear sky for the auroras, right now there is just a chance of a clear window during the night... Obviously there is far too much light pollution in Glasgow to see anything; northern side of Loch Lomond is getting acceptable.

We'll see what it is actually like. I'll take my chances trying to save £1k+ trip to Tromso. Sigma 35mm f/1.4 - good choice? Somehow I doubt it will be that good to require 14mm?

Well if this morning in Inverclyde was anything to go by, visibility might not be great at midnight:

There's no sky at all where I am at the moment, just a white/grey nothingness :(

Whenever there's anything like this there's never a chance of seeing it here :(

around Loch Lomond there is a 1-2 hour clear window in the latest forecast. We'll see how it develops to the evening. I am not ready to give up on it yet. The Sigma is ready for action.

I just need to think about some elevated locations accessible by car with some lakes in the view... Climbing Ben Lomond at night is a rather desperate measure.

I am down south, North Hampshire, i was thinking of going out around midnight with the camera but after reading the above....I might not bother as it seems I won't see it from all the way down here ????

Clear blue sky up here in Perthshire

I'm on the east coast at flamborough at the minute so hope to be looking out for it .

Not a bad idea actually. I'm still a bit concerned about light pollution but if I don't feel like doing a longer trip will certainly have a go here.

It's probably worth just sticking your head out to see if there's any sign.

Or just check this thread at midnight.

its saying that its peak will be around 3am-4am, I'm split about going to bed late or getting up super early ???

Me too. Giving clear sky around the north coast of northern ireland till 3am and it is an hours drive for me up there. Bed now and up again at 12 or stick it out and crawl into bed at 5am?
