aurora borealis

Sounds cool, I live near Cardiff (Wales) so doubt i'll have any chance of seeing it, with the light pollution we get.

Just incase though... I've never looked for one before, where/when should I look for the aurora. direction etc? :)

ooh nice, remember seeing them this time of year back in 2003, big red streaks

weather up her is b awful so theres not much chance i'm afraid

It needs to be quite dark, no moon, clear sky, could be any time of night I guess.

Look north.

Fat chance really.:shake:

Weather looks like it might be okay here in Belfast. Might try and capture something.

Any idea of a time range?

I've just had a look at the site and it seems that the activity was around midday today - not much use. Nothing forecast for tonight.

Great link, though - thanks!

I signed up for that site today, and just got an e-mail apologizing for the incorrect e-mail alert sent out today!!

:bonk:

:) I sit next to the guy who runs the system... he has had none stop people poping in all day asking about it! The web traffic load also upset the servers!

Unfortunatly just some faulty detectors from what I hear!!

James

I got the alert and I also got the appology that the alert was a false alarm.

I'll be honest I was suprised I got the alert as we are currently at the low of the sunspot cycle (linked to the Aurora) - the next peak is 2013. I am definately looking forward to actually receiving a proper alert :D

ahh to be in scotland would be great :-)

If it goes off tonight it'll be for real. AuroraWatch is definitely showing the most activity I've seen for ages.

Anyone else seen some suspiciously green skies? It's cloudy here so my cast-iron test of seeing stars through the aurora doesn't work. I went to a site I know that's dark and away from street lighting only to find low cloud hanging over the hill. Maybe it was lighting from the uni sports field, or maybe it was aurora.

Good stuff....I'll have a look if its clear tonight!

I'm in Scotland and our light pollution from the town isn't that bad so I might just have a chance at this.

Didn't see any, saw plenty of stars though - Orion's looking great
