I an effort to be able to get a headphone out from a Canon I opted to send away for a few cables - I bought 10cm mini-jack to mini-jack and a mono splitter cable with the intention of plugging the headphones into one side and the mini-jack into the other then directly into the camera. The splitter splitter cable is shagged before I even start as you have to really mess with the connection to get it to come through on both channels.

I took a feed from the Rode Videomic Pro, into the Tascam DR-05 then put the splitter cable on the mic/lineout and although I could monitor the audio OK the signal was super hot into the camera and peaking into the reds even from a whisper.

The 70D was set to 1 click from the left and the Tascam line level was on 1, and the Rode on -10db yet the signal was still peaking into the yellows.

What am I doing wrong?

Looks like the Tascam is supplying a very strong signal. OK Yellow peaks are not good but can be livable with provided they are just in the yellow.and not causing clipping. The Whirlwind cable looks ideal, pity there isn't UK alternative. ( well I couldn't find one ).

An alternative would be to ignore the output from the camera and use the Tascam audio. Depending on what software you have this can be fairly easy or a little difficult. Should your software support audio syncing then no problem. Just sync the output and mute the camera track. The other alternative is to manual sync tracks. Not as difficult as it seems. Try to find a wave form that matches both the camera and Tascam audio. Then simply slip the Tascam audio to match. I have done it and it's not as difficult as it seems.

I've just been trying to use what I have, minus a few cheap cables, but to be honest I'll probably just monitor the audio input visually on screen. If the audio source is close to the camera then the rode will be fine on the camera and when it's too far away I can use the Tascam with a lav mic and sync the audio later.

I'm not running a commercial set up so I have some room to experiment a little.
