Hi Guys,

Can anyone who lives in or around the Birmingham area of the United Kingdom recommended a good Photography Club with a contact name & its website link if possible.

Appreciated

Hi, InaGlo
Thanks for the reply, I'm going to make contact with The Smethwick PS over the next week or so.
They have a very comprehensive web site http://www.theoldschoolhouse.com/
I'll keep you posted.
Regards

Something I've been looking at joining too so would be interested on hearing which club(s) you contact, and might come along with you if it's reasonably local.

Edit: Just seen your last post. I'm in Stechford over the other side of the city, but might make a trip over at some point to see what it's all about :)

Ive heard quite a bit about Smethwick, its supposed to be very 'Old boy network' but also one of the best.
Definately be interested to hear about it if you go, so do keep me posted.

Hi

I am in Halesowen too - would be interested to hear how you get on - not into the 'old boy' stuff tho.

Hi Guys,
Just keeping you up to pace with a visit I made tonight, by putting my head in the door at The Smethwick Photographic Society.

Their new web site: http://www.smethwickphotographic.co.uk/

As it happens its the week of the Smethwick International Exhibition of Photography & I have to say there were some 400 exhibits out of 4000 entries being shown, & all picture's entered were 1st class.
The building, an old school house has been converted to allocate for the needs of the membership, some 300 people, being made up from all age groups. The club has meetings on different nights of the week for a variety of topics & themes. There is a social area to buy a drink whether it be a cup of tea or a glass of beer. Also within the building they have a dedicated studio, lecture rooms, dark room facilities & a library.

Although a busy night for the exhibition organizers they gave me time, & pleasant with it, to answer any questions I asked about the club & membership enrollment. There is definitely a vast experience of knowledge within the membership of the club, to which they are more than willing to pass on to new comers like myself.

My I suggest anyone that's interested, have a good look at their new web site which will tell you a lot more about the club than I have said in these few words.

While I was there I picked up a membership form, & for an annual subscription of £28 I personally don't think you can go wrong.

Regards

Wow.... this looks impressive.

Are you going to join? I'm interested too.

Hi Glitter,
I picked up a membership application form along with an SPS booklet last night. I will go about 7.30pm next Monday night & my intention is to hand in my form with the £28 annual fee & hopefully be accepted into the club.

If you don't live to far away from the club, address & directions on thier web site
http://www.smethwickphotographic.co.uk/
put your head in the door any night this week between 7 & 8 pm & have a look for yourself & if it's what your looking for then come away with a membership form.
I was impressed, but it might not be your cup of tea.

If I can be of further help please mail me & lets hope we meet soon.

Kind regards

I live in Rubery, and ive heard some good reports about "Webheath Digital Photography Club" which is at Redditch and im gonna give it a go if anyone else fancys it :)

Redditch is too far away from me, Halesowenkid, I will pop in hopefully tomorrow evening on the way home from work and have a look.

apparantly there are members who live in sutton coldfield who to Webheath :)

BoozyBill, thanks for the recomendation, I am the Chairman of said Webheath Digital Photography Club in Redditch www.webheathdpc.co.uk

We have been going for nearly a year now having started the club from scratch due to a couple of us not thinking there was a club that catered for our Digital photographic needs, we now have a membership of nearly 40 across all ages and almost equal male/female ratio.

We manage a full programme of practical and theory nights and do not close down for the summer as other clubs tend to do (we take the opportunity to have field trips and take photos "how radical").

It has been hard work but our membership seem to like what we do and provide them weekly and there has been a significant improvement in peoples photography since joining, a number started with us with "point and shoots" and have progressed onto Digital SLR's having got the "bug"

We are all learning and look at post processing evenings etc...on a regular basis, with snapshots of the topic rather than everyone trying to learn photoshop in an hour and half.

Anyone living near us are welcome to come along (we do have a member who travels 45 mile round trip to be with us every Tuesday) and any of you visiting the Midlands in the future are also welcome.

Smethwick PS of course are much more established and have a very good reputation and level of photography, not sure if geared up for the "newbie"? but you will learn with them thats for sure.

Our next venture is to get an open day set up for kids with interests in photography and teach them how to use their digital cameras etc....

Hope to see you with us soon.....kettles always on!!

Thanks for keeping us to to date Halesowenkid.
Im interested too, Ive had a quick gander at the site just now.
I see it says that the 'main programme' is on a Thursday, which is the one night that is difficult for me. :(
Might pop over this Monday evening if I can, see whats what.
