Attempted Military Coup in Turkey

BBC news now reporting the coup has failed, when will Corbyn do the right thing and resign?
Good question, he should!

It will be interesting to know if this coup was inspired by any religious reason, i.e Muslim fundamentalists

Our son is working out there, near Bodrum - reports no trouble down that way this morning. :)

Quite the opposite more like. Despite apparent election results, I understand Erdogan to be generally quite unpopular among ordinary Turks, and he has become increasingly oppressive.

The opposite. The Turkish military consider themselves the defenders of Ataturk's vision of a secular democratic state. Erdogan, whilst elected, has become increasingly autocratic.

There will probably now be a purge of moderates from Turkey's armed forces, which cannot be good.

It is very reassuring to know that the Eu sought the help of a firmly stable country to assist with managing the refugee crisis.

From the Independent
The EU has clinched an agreement with Turkey giving Ankara €3 billion (£2 billion) and a pledge to renew its membership bid in exchange for help holding back refugees trying to make their way to Europe.

Don't think that, just because other European states appear stable, the same thing couldn't happen there. Riots in the UK, with looting and violence didn't happen all that long ago.

Bodrum and Izmir airports closed ,who the hell wrote the script for 2016 ,

Here we go down to a sunless sea
I liked David Graham's book "Down to a Sunless Sea".... Must dig it out sometime!

I think it's more than them just thinking they're the defenders - I think it's actually in the constitution that they are the defenders. Apparently the current elected regime have been nibbling away at the constitution and as the coup seems to have failed it'll be interesting to see what happens next. If the nibbling becomes a rewrite and Turkey slides into being an Islamic state rather than a secular democracy I can imagine many of the young and Eurocentric being rather hacked off... just before they're hacked to bits. Maybe.

I wonder why he is arresting all the judges. A seemingly strange step, and all the hallmarks of a dictator. Lots of turks phoning in to LBC today suggesting it was his own down so he can flush out the seculars/moderates from the army.

That was nothing remotely resembling a coup.

Turkey has a long established history that shows it is anything, but stable. There were military coups in 1960, 1971 and 1980. In 1997 the PM was forced out of power under the threat of military coup. In 2007 the military threatened to intervene in presidential elections unless action was taken to curb ISIL. That failed and the candidate with ISIL leanings took office. The current coup attempt follows a long period of removing army officers who may favour an uprising.

Here's hoping that any fellow forumites who may be on holiday or working there during the disturbance are safe.

Turkey ............they seem to have got it sorted!

The interior ministry dismissed almost 9,000 police officers on Monday, as part of a purge of officials suspected of involvement

That followed the arrest of 6,000 military personnel and suspension of almost 3,000 judges over the weekend.

and it is all the Americans fault

and, not to be out done

The German Chancellor Angela Merkel told Mr Erdogan on Monday that Turkey's ambitions to join the European Union would be over if he carried through on a threat to reinstate the death penalty.

after expecting a few hangings from lampposts

is that all

Turkey have no real ambitions to join the EU anyway, so Erdogan won't lose any sleep over Ms Merkel's threat in that direction.

amazing that, that many people can keep a secret?

I can't help but wonder that that is conveniently all moderates out of the way. And the end of the secular state.

I heard something similar, inasmuch as the theory I heard put forward was that he staged this himself, (eye witness reports a lot of posturing and no real fighting).
So he could weed out his "opposition"
18,000 "security personnel" is a lot to replace, I wonder where he'll get the replacements?

Worrying times (not least because a close friend's wife lives in Ankara) but could be for the best in the long term. Erdogan seemed to be heading down a dangerous road and a more secular government might be better for Turkey and the region as a whole.

I guess we will line up behind Doncald Trumpo and go to war against Turkey :-)

Conscription? :(
Only cost millions of deaths in 2 world wars and, in the case of 1918..... the dramatic issue of young women being informed, whilst still at school, that their likelihood of finding a husband in the UK was limited..... there were potential husbands available in the Colonies.....

White feathers anyone?

The sad thing is there are still people that believe that 'surgical' nuclear weapon strikes in the Middle East is a favoured solution to ISIS. These people consider themselves educated.

I was answering the question Cobra asked, rather than suggesting you should head down to the recruiting office before you're called.

I had guessed and my addition was aimed at widening out your point.

Trouble is, in a truncated world, people have got used to reacting rather than asking - I was not 'shooting you down'.

I have always enjoyed reading and re-reading history. So much fuzziness. I have heard discussions about Robin Hood and Richard the Lionheart. They look aghast when told one did not exist and the other did not speak English and was rarely a visitor to England, though was much admired by Saladin...

Race you to the recruiting office? [emoji3]

It was almost too perfectly staged ;)

Beware the foot (leg end).

I didn't think it needed widening out to that degree, really.

I'd agree about the fuzziness of history, but so much has been forgotten about the various wars, even and including the Iraq invasion.

You are right but hey, on a quiet evening and the company of relatively interesting strangers all babbling about all things bright, dark and nonsensical in a world of 7.3bn itt can be a useful filler.

In any case I have woken to a beautiful morning in a beautiful location and the world, for me, at the moment anyway, is a small, gentle and special place. So what was yesterday is consigned to history and today a new part of history is starting. Reality will be along soon enough to crap on it, so breakfast calls.

Have a great day.

Steve

I'm not totally sure they will be almost 3,000 judges just sitting around waiting to be conscripted though :D
That's ok then, good excuse to introduce more Qadi's. No formal qualifications required, just be free (!?), sane, adult, trustworthy and a Muslim. Job done, that is all it takes ;) Surely can't be too hard to find three thousand with those qualifications ;)

More than 15,000 education staff in Turkey have been suspended after last week's failed coup, as a purge of state officials widens still further.

"I'm sorry but this parallel terrorist organisation will no longer be an effective pawn for any country," Mr Yildirim said, according to Reuters.

"We will dig them up by their roots so that no clandestine terrorist organisation will have the nerve to betray our blessed people again."

Train spotters next!

Perhaps free holidays; free rooms in an all inclusive resort if you teach the curriculum and be a judge for a day.

You too. Crete, wasn't it? Lovely (and a safe distance). ;)
A bit closer. I am on a six month (minimum) coastal tour of Ireland. Weather has been variable but has been lovely today. On the edge of the Shannon today .
