So, the last hour has been interesting. I got two text messages, telling me that an attempt had been made at 13:40 today to take £170.00 on my credit card and that I had to contact the phone number in the message ASAP. So, I decided to look at the number on the back of my credit card and it was different to the one in the text. So, I phoned what I knew to be the genuine number and it transpires that someone called "Debt Recovery Holdings", based in London had tried to take the money, but the attempt had been rejected. We have no debts, no mortgage etc. it also appears that the number on the texts was genuine, so given all the scams which happen, why is that number different to the one on the back of my credit card and why should I have trusted it?

You should never call a number other than your own bank or credit card company. I've had similar messages in the past. Always call your own bank/card company on the number you know.

This seems to be a common scam with spoofed numbers and plausible script. Nearly got me once.

to be honest i just wouldn't even get out of bed to answer the text
you have a CC is all covered just check your app on your phone any issues just flag them up.

The problem is, that the texts were genuine, but they are of the type which we are told to ignore. Meanwhile, the bank have stopped my credit card, which I cannot use for another week at the least. So, if you ignored it, then you wouldn't have even realised that your credit card had been cancelled.

I had similar recently.

They had put my CC onto their phone. So when my ‘new’ CC was issued, it updated on their phone as well. I promise you not, the new card was also compromised.

Keep your eyes peeled for secondary and immediate theft.

Bastards.

Why I don’t bank on my phone.
Quite!
I don't use my phone for anything purchase related and would certainly never do so for banking or CC apps.
