Attaching lens caps

Now I know its a silly question but how do you attach the lens caps to a D5100 body?

I'm used to seeing elasticated fixings that fix to the lens but i have been given a handful of Nikon lens caps with a corded hoop.
 
Ive never seen a nikon DSLR lens cap with elastic. I would imagine they are either modified or for a bridge camera.
 
None of my lens caps fix to the body.

You have to remember to put them somewhere safe!

Lens caps are just that ,for the lens, Nikon camera bodies have their own caps with the same fitting as a lens have and replace the lens. Lens caps I just put safely in my camera bag.

The only cap I secure to my camera is that on my Fuji X10. That is fitted with a sticky pad thing attached to the camera strap with a length of elastic cord. I would never attach my DSLR caps in the same way as they would always be in the way.
 
Surely you would tether the cap to the lens and not the body - otherwise you'd have to dangle all your lens caps from the camera instead of leaving them on the lenses :D. I would take the cord/elastic off the cap and use them 'untethered'. I bought a centre-pinch lens cap (with cord) to replace a Canon 'edge-pinch' so that I could get it off easier when using a lens hood - if you tether the cap then you will only be able to reverse/remove/attach the hood with the lens cap off.

i use a couple of bungees for my lens caps to hold them in place. can only do this as I have certain lenses which stay on certain bodies. they can be bought off ebay for pennies.

I can see the reason for using them as Ive lost hundreds of lens caps through the years and usually its because ive been somewhere stupid whilst taking a photo
 
I think I'm right in saying that the ebay linked item above is non genuine. I haven't seen a modern genuine Nikon centre pinch cap with a tether cord so I would assume that any that have one are copies. The copies that I've used are okay but I've always found that they never feel quit right. They don't pinch smoothly and don't always sit neatly on the lens and are therefore prone to falling off.

Straight in my jeans back pocket for me. Not lost a cap yet, touch wood.

I have also have a mate who never fits lens caps at all and has some quite expensive gear. He just leaves the hood on in his bag and I don't think he's had an issue yet.
 
I just shove it in my pocket as well. Would hate to have it dangling by a chord. I also have 3-4 spares, but not needed one yet...
 
Interchangeable lenses' caps get put in my shirt pocket so I always know where they are - a habit I picked up 30+ years ago after losing several caps!

Non-interchangeable lenses' caps are tied to the left eye on the camera.

I have an alternative cap on order for my X-10 - as the lens is extended when the camera's switched on, it pushes through the cap's 3 "petals". You lose the tactile zoom ring feel but it speeds up the on/off process. There's a link to the Amazon source in the X-10 thread by Yves Geza.
 
Generally pop them in my pocket and also leave them off if I'm going to be taking shots any time - can't be doing with keep taking it and off.
