Yes
I'm ditching my frankly poor Belkin router & thinking of the Asus RT-N66U.

Am I right in thinking I'll need a modem between it & the socket, and if so can I change the current router to a modem only setting & link the Asus to it?

Am on ADSL, TalkTalk.

ALso thinking of fiddling with the extension cable & disconnecting the ring wire except the colours are all very strange!?!

Help!

Good choice!

Yes, you are right. Whether you can use your Belkin as the modem will be dependent upon what one it is and what software there is on it. If not, you can pick up a modem for around £20. I have a TP Link one I am setting up this weekend which cost £15 - part no: TD-8816, Dlink do one that is slightly more expensive at around £20ish - just google ADSL2 modem.

Never done the ring wire change, so can't help there :)

Thanks Andy - it was you who put me on to the Asus router ;)

Will get home soon & check the Belkin can be set as modem only.

Got the idea of removing the ring wire from various websites claiming it can "clean up" your phone line & improve d/l speeds.

Bet I just disconnect the house from the 'net instead lol!
