I'm thinking about trying my hand at some low-end astrophotography. I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with it, or was experimenting with it as well.

List of equipment, ideas and other useful facts would be handy.

Thanks in advance.

What more do you want to know? :D

Previous thread - The same!!

Gear wise - You need to think about what you want to take pictures of, the moon, deep space nebulae, constellations? These will require different things.

The moon wants a nice long lens, sturdy tripod, remote and mirror lockup.

Deep space requires a smaller lens, probably up to 200mm as far as I can tell from my reading, a MEGA sturdy tripod and tracking so that you can take multiple exposures.

Constellations will require a much wider lens, even a 50mm isn't really wide enough.

Of course, so far I haven't even mentioned a telescope!! You can get away without one for a lot of stuff as I understand it.

Then there's software - All free on the net, Registrax and DeepSkyStacker spring to mind. If you ever learn how to use these, then let me know!!

This is just a couple of additional ideas from yesterday, coming from a TOTAL amateur. I hope I've not got anything really wrong

Hi Justin

As Sara says it might be better to give us an idea of the kind of shots your after as it really is a huge subject to cover :) But if it helps, my suggestion would be to start with just a wide angled lens on a tripod and take multiple exposures (duration depends on FL of the lens), med ISO, Wide aperture ... Just to see how you get on.
