Buy from reputable UK based suppliers and you should be OK. Avoid E-Bay and AMP.

Not all OEM batteries are 100% safe - I had my first DSLR battery recalled and replaced by Nikon (IIRC the batteries were sourced from Sony.)

Something i very much doubt would be implemented by a Chinese manufacturer of non oem.

Just had a look at an assortment of batteries from Nikon, Fuji and Panasonic and about 1/2 of them are "Made in China". All Genuine OEM. Recalls would usually be handled by the distributor and in the case of my Nikon one that got recalled, it was done via e-mail since I had registered my body. Can't remember if the recall was publicised in the press but not everyone registers their purchases or reads magazines.

Well most 'stuff ' is made in China, however an OEM would ensure that stringent testing and adherence to safety rules was carried out. It's the ones making grey goods that do it wrong, that's how they can undercut the cost of OEM ones. Of course any company can make counterfeit goods and make them poorly to save pennies, they don't have to be Chinese. I think the point I was making was that the culture in China allows it to happen so much more. But as I said, attitudes are changing.
