Basically im wondering what the rules and laws are for photographing celebs.

Today a film crew came to my village to film this Sundays episode of Sunday night's Project on Channel 4. There were some basic celebs including Will Young, if you are from the US then you wouldn't know who he is..

Well anyway, my mum pretty much sorts out the village since we get a lot of film crews here since its the most haunted village in england and so on. Well, since im trying to get into media she asked the production team before they came if i could take some photos for the village website. They said sure that wont be a problem.

Well they turned up today and I went along to meet them after they finished their first location. When I arrived they hadnt got there yet but I was told that I CANT take pictures of the celebs without consent from their agents. I was like, huh, im just here to take pictures for the village. Afterall you are filming here for free. She said I doubt I will be able to take anything because its the 'rules'.

I should add that they are at a place where i know very well, a local hotel where I am friends with the owners and my mother does a lot for.

The next thing one of the owners comes over and tells me to leave, I say hmm, sure ok and go to get back in the car. They he tells me 'NOW!' I say chill out, now need to be rude and leave.

The question is, what is the deal with having permission from the agents just to take some pictures, im sure the paparatzi dont have permission..

er
public place
the rights are with you I think

If you were on Hotel property the hotel owner/s had the right to deny you permission to photograph anything or anyone. What you should have done then was to go onto the public road and continue from there where they have no jurisdiction.

you don't need permission from agents to take pics especially if they're on public ground, but the owner of private property like a hotel can definitely tell you to leave his property.

As above.

As long as you and they were both in a public place, you can taken as many pictures are you want.

If they were on the hotel grounds, you don't have a leg to stand on.
But you could take pictures from a public place.
It all depends on what the pictures would be used for.

Pretty standard tactics. Production crew will "bully" when they can to stop photos being taken. But remember it is their job to keep things running smoothly and they don't want the celebs getting fed up, etc. Unfortunately they've heard every line there is ten times before and will trust no one unless someone has the right pass, etc.

I had a very similar experience when I worked on the Joss Stone video shoot. Production crew who didn't know who I was saw the camera and immediately turned on the attitude and stood right in front of me. As soon as they were told who I was and why I was there it was friendly and helpful. It's just a game of cat and mouse.

As others have said, public land then it's open season but the crew will do what they can to make your life difficult.

Next time make sure your name is on any lists, get a pass, etc. and you should find things are better. But if you go that route you'll probably have to sign some kind of NDA/Rights agreement what will limit how you can use the shots.

Not quite. It's not the hotel who have said that photos can't be taken. A production crew may tell you that but unless they have the right to limit photography then it means nothing.

I would have stood on the nearest bit of 'public' land and carried on shooting, just to provoke a reaction but i'm like that sometimes :D :bat:

This is where it goes foggy, owners and owners.....who exactly told you to leave, was it the owners of the hotel = you have to leave.
Agents/production staff whatever can't tell you to do anything if you are in a public place, however it would be prudent not to interfere with the comings and goings, these people are used to dealing with the real pappz and won't think twice about using the same tactics to remove you, rightly or wrongly.
Everybody with a camera gets tarred with the same pap brush.

You can't have been that friendly with the hotel owners, I would have thought a quite word in your ear would have been sufficient, maybe they were "leaned on"
Or maybe it just wasn't the owners of the Hotel:shrug:

ive always been told, take a picture, ask them or their agents, if they say no you can still print that picture before their permission was granted.

So as long as its public theres nothing to stop you, at the end of the day there just a person.

what can the film crew do to stop you anyway?

If its a hotel or other private place to which you have an inferred right of access as a 'customer' I would think that you only become a trespasser once that right has been removed by someone authorised to remove it. Therefore any photos you take before you are asked to leave are fair game. If you were there having dinner with your family with a point and shoot on the table and a celeb walked past, then you are fully entitled to fire off a couple of shots.
Simple trespass, of course, is a civil matter not a criminal one.

Comus

If they are in public places they are fair game. You don't need their permission to take their photos and as long as the images are used for editorial use then you won't need a model release either. If you want to sell the images for stock or for private use then a model release would be needed.
If the people are on private property then you will need to seek permission.

Have a look at this:

The place where I live is a small village, a lot of people know each other and I have helped the hotel out before, plus my mother arranges most of the stuff that goes on here.
The deal was that the crew could film in the village without paying anything and I would be able to tag along and take pictures. Since I had worked on film sets before I would know the rights and wrongs of being on a set.

However, the production company chose to break this agreement. There are two people that own the hotel, when one told us to leave, my girlfriend saw the other owner frown as if to say wtf are you doing, we know them and he has helped us loads in the past.

What I think is that the production woman told him to get rid of us, the trouble is he did it the wrong way. Maybe he didnt realise who I was. Sure as anything, his partner knew who we were.

Im just ****ed that it was arranged for me to be there and I was shut down.

send a complaint to channel 4 (im guessing its endemol- the *******s) also send a complaint to the hotel.

if you live in the village i would think you no the people who run the Hotel so ask them if you can take photos on there grounds, :D give them the shots for there use and you get waht you want as well. But arround the village if they are in sight and you are in a public place you can fire away :D

if your Mum does the village website I would get her to write a little note that the hotel and the production company welched on your mutual agreement to allow for pictures of the celebs to be taken for the village website in return for them using the villages own facilities.....so the village has been ripped for its own publicity and the website suffers for much needed content.

Have you got a loud lawnmower? Not that I would advise you use it every time they start trying to shoot...

I would also take the matter up with whoever arranged your permission - probably be more effective than talking about it here.

Ah you should stamp around shouting "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?" :D:D:D

A reminder to the hotel owner that you and the villagers (his usual customers) will still be in the village long after the film crew has gone and he will be relying on the locals for his income. A mention to him about his attitude being posted on the village website just might put off locals returning to his hotel when he needs them.

Get a helicopter, a super zoom, position yourself and the helicopter above the hotel, and snap away!! They'll have to stop filming as the noise will be too much, hopefully they'll all empty out of the hotel to see who's ruining the shoot, at which point you bag some nice aerial shots of Will Youngs chin!!?? :)

It's Will Young, you'd need a fisheye to get his big fat head and chin in the shot.

I would have thought a long zoom from very far away to try and flatten his bulbous features. ;)

As for the way the original poster has been treated by the Hotel owners who are supposedly friends, I would tell them where to go, and tell everyone about their attitude to local people once the chance of making a quick buck turns up.

But then I can hold a grudge forever. ;)

Am i the only one who thinks its entirely reasonable for a hotel owner to look after the privacy of his customers?
He didn't go above his rights it sounds like.

If i was staying at a hotel i'd want the staff to do that for me too if there were people trying to take pics of me :(

Normally i would agree with you on that, but they had an agreement that they should honour.

Its not the fact he asked me to leave, just the way. It is their place and they can ask me to leave but to tell me to leave NOW, as I was already getting in the car was a little too much.

sounds to me Richard that your feelings have been hurt more than anything and who can blame you... at least if you get the opportunity again you will know to shoot first and then leg it. :O)

Yeh i definitely agree on him being rude about it. My comment before was more on peoples reactions about not being able to take photos of them.

Tell them if they don't let you take pics you will get a mega phone and walk around all day when they film, shouting Will Young is crap.

I'm interested to see several posts dissing Will Young, when as far as can see, he didn't appear to be involved in this situation at all.

Anthony.

Well, he was there

I would have stood my ground and demanded to know why the agreement was not being kept to!:rules:

i spoke to my tutor about this today as i said earlier int he thread, you can take one picture and then ask for permission, if they say no you can still use that one.

not sure about being asked to leave, if theyve broken a spoken contract as such you really should complain.

was it endemol?
