Article in today's Times

I just read this in the paper. This place really is turning into a nanny state. Public apathy to these infringements of their humans rights is sad...

We are the most observed country on the planet...
 
i was just thinking about this again.. and while yes things are going bad. not every where is like it. i was in Harrogate this week and the town was crawling with police.. i took photo's where i wanted even the bus station never once was i asked not to my husband was with me with his camera too..

i think what i am trying to say is yes some people are getting stopped and it making the papers but most people are being left alone.

i know the swimming pool, park ect is well over the top, and something should be addresses regards to this maybe people writing to the local council to ask why this is being done.. enough people writing will maybe get thisngs changed.

now if you understood any of that well done

I've never been asked to stop taking pics by anyone in my life.

There is a lot of real news about but the entertainment industry (AKA the media) are only interested in sales figures.
 
It seems to be London where they are worst.

Another media person complaining out freedom to take pictures in public places. Yes there are occations where people ar stopped taking pictures in public places, although I never have been.

But it is still uncommon - not a very balanced piece

Not for me it isnt. Never has been and it never will be.

Everyone just needs to get out there and enjoy their hobby without the media attempting to turn every photographer into a paranoid wreck.

You say 'some people are getting stopped' but the fact is that NOBODY should be getting stopped! It may not be happening in Harrogate yet, but don't become too complacent, one day it will happen all over the country unless people do something about it.

The sad thing is that all this over-protectivity will mean that there'll be no photographsof everyday life for future generations to look back upon the way we can

You say 'some people are getting stopped' but the fact is that NOBODY should be getting stopped! It may not be happening in Harrogate yet, but don't become too complacent, one day it will happen all over the country unless people do something about it.

i understand that.. iwas just saying that these news articals seem to mainly london or major cities.. or by jobs worth.. i agree no one should be stopped but then again maybe we should have to pay fora liecence.. to own and use a camera in public.. thw way this blinking govenment is going that is what it will be next#

never been stopped taking pics and dont see how it affects anyone when i want to take pics in public places. this country is going mad with all the furore surrounding photography in public places,to me it is just a snapshot in time to look back on in years to come reminding me of the places ive visited.

dont start stupid ideas like that lol the world already going mad with apparant lynch mobs looking to hang the next person taking a photo in the street! whats to stop someone in a terrorist group obtaining a licence? they not exactly gpinmg top declare they want to blow up somewhere in england are they? people need to relax its because is everyone does like 90 hours a week work to pay for overpriced housing that stresses them out. get back to fundamental basics of how the world used to be 30 years ago and none of these problems would exist.

They say people are complaining all the time of having pictures taken etc but it would be interesting to know if Joe Public really agrees with what the papers say.


I don't like the idea that all this publicity just makes people more and more suspicious of photographers and more likely to inform on them. If all they ever read is that people are getting stopped because the police think they might be a terrorist then they will start believing all people taking pictures are up to no good. If you make all the public scared and willing to inform on anyone then you end up with a police force like the Stasi!

Ive taken quite a few in london on most my vists to be fair, d2hs and 70-200 so its not exactly small kit either and i have NEVER been stopped.

Ive been stopped once or twice at the free festivals in teesside but that was by the police actually asking to look at some of the snaps from the bands.

Yes you can go looking for trouble by being arsey but most these people are just doing their jobs, yes you get a few idiots but im pretty sure everyones had their fair share of moronic shop assistants for example

so most , if not all , of the replies to the original post have been along the lines of its all wrong we should be alowed to take pics in public places ( as the law is at the moment ), now we've all seen the posts elsewhere ,where some people have put up a stand against the police ,and quite a few replies to that stand have been something like , he (the photographer making a stand ) is a knob , he's just doing it to be awkward ,,just trying to get publicity etc ,,,now how many of you would , if stopped by the police and told to go away would carry on and make a stand ,or go away even though you didnt have to in law ??????

Quite - it's easier to cave-in under pressure...which will embolden these uniformed zealots all the more...
It seems to be more a case of community-liaison officers rather than 'proper' police officers though, I'm happy to say... most of them need to go to the gym a bit more to work off all those doughnuts...
It's very difficult to argue the case against someone in uniform and in an apparent postion of authority when that person hasn't got a clue about the law he/she is supposed to be upholding... feels like this :bang:

Like the guy in the railway station told not to take images because 'people might not like it' - what people? Had complaints been made? No...so why? Just because...

And that's the problem - you can't argue with these idiots - they've already made up their minds and nothing you say or do will convince them to alter that view, because in their own tiny minds, to do so would be to back down, admid defeat, to be made to look stupid. To 'lose' an argument or be seen to change postion would make them lose face...

And we can't have these plastic woodentops being made to look silly, can we?
