Armed police

Unfortunately these days with the more frequent, random and spontaneous attacks of this type by these b@stards the greater the need for our Police to be armed is. Difficult to argue against as long as this threat exists.

I am sure there are armed people in parliament.

Police being armed should be a decision for the police and the police alone.
 
You do know we do have armed police in this country. Right?

I don't think there is a need to fully arm our police force. We have a specialist armed devision that are placed all over and can be called upon to react very quickly. Especially in major cities

Some mad axe man swings for two cops. There have been to many officers killed in the line of duty. They need guns and they need guns now. Every country I have been too all the police have guns. It is right and normal.
 
We already have armed police. Simple. Unless you meant to write that all police officers should carry weapons?

Two of our friends are cops, was at the pub with one last night, and they themselves do not want guns. Ok, they patrol cambridge which is very safe, but neither would choose to be armed.

There is a strong argument that if cops were armed, more criminals would be more likely to be armed too.

There is probably a case for more armed police but not all of them.

You said the guns saved the police officers from death when in reality there's no possible way you can know that, is there?

Axeman could take another swing. Being able to shoot the perp dead saved their lives. There can be no doubt about it. You just don't like guns.

Viv, I think if some madman is swinging at you with an axe it's pretty reasonable to assume the intent and outcome is likely to be death. In this particular case there's no question the intention was to kill.

The threat from extreme Islam is every bit as real here as it is over there. That's what the OP is stating I think.

More personal remarks. As they are from you, I am ok with it. If the US would let me live there, I would go. I find your bit in bold bordering on racism. America is a success story IMHO.

I think we must be the only country where normal police aren't armed. In Italy, Greece, Spain, France, any police you see has a gun. We are the exception and therefore I am comparing the UK to more than the USA (which you know politically I am more aligned to)

This, and any other continental country I have been too, the cops have guns. The islamist extremist threat sadly is very real.

This isn't aimed at you, but I find it bizarre people oppose our police having the best tools available to defend themselves.

Yes I can see the intent was clear, of course it was. But absolutely no one can say for a fact that they would have died but for shooting him. They MIGHT have died, yes.

And Steve you have no idea what my stance is on guns, because I haven't stated it either way.

Surely the police should decide. Could be wrong but don't think the police federation are in favour.
