Argh! I dropped my camera

I stupidly dropped my camera today. I'm not even sure how as I'm usually so careful about having the strap wrapped round my wrist ... but I did :bang:

The lens (my canon 50mm f/1.8) seems OK but there are a few gouges out of the casing of the camera body and a scratch on the screen at the back. There are also a few spots when I look through the viewfinder, though I can't immediately see where they're coming from. There may also be a couple of small scratches on the rear element of the lens.

I dropped it on a gravel and dust path just to add to the woes :shake:

Is it worth taking the camera and lens to get cleaned and/or checked out? Or should it all be OK?

Sorry to hear you have dropped your camera. Have you a rocket blower? And how did the lens manage to get scratched on the rear element?

Hows it performing now - if he pictures are okay theres no need to check it out, if they arent then it needs a check out (are you insured for accidental damage - either drectly or under your house insurance, if not take this as an early warning to get some cover (I've written off complete sets three seperate times, two soakings once in salt water and once in fresh, and once when I collected a cricket ball on the end of the lens - My insurance is a god send, though i bet they just 'love' me ))

and if the lens is scratched given the price of a f1.8 50mm repair probably isnt economic, bin it an buy another one

It's not *phew* I dug out a new lens cloth and gave it a gentle wipe and it's actually all OK.

I think I've gone a bit crazy at the thought of damaging my baby! :bonk:

Take a few snaps at various apertures, of the clear blue sky, or a plain piece of white paper, and look for any unusual specs of dust, etc when you download the pictures. If you have any, you may have some dust in there, or dislodged some dust contaminants. If you have, charge your battery up fully, then lock up the mirror, remove the lens, and go about gently blowing the dust out. Do this by Holding the camera up in the air, face down so that when you gently, and carefully squeeze the rocket blower, any dislodged dust particles have a greater chance of dropping out of the camera body. I hope this helps?

Thanks everyone. Good advice as always. I feel a bit calmer now and will take some test shots tomorrow and compare to the "pre-drop" pictures from today.

Appreciate all the advice. And I've definitely got a "well worn" camera now!! <<< trying to see the funny side!

The strap is usually the main cause when you drop your camera.

Hehe! I am sure it will be fine, the 40d is a toughie, although I never went as far as dropping it! I would be more worried about the 50mm, they fall apart if you sneeze too hard!
