I am currently installing Word Press myself so that I can do one of my absolute beginners guides and create a simple basic site. All three of my sites need an improvement and whilst I am off work stuck in bed I might as well start :)
 
For someone who self admits they have no idea.. this is a very damming thread title. ..

Looks like you got a free template to go with your domain and as such cant change it.. that does not mean your not allowed to build your own website on 123-reg as you say... because you are.. you just dont understand how it works.. that does not make 123-reg crap.. it makes you unknowledgeable..

Sorry just dont like to see a company publicly slagged off for no real reason... I think I am on a be fair crusade today :)

Same thing as people who but a camera and then say it's crap because it doesn't take stunning noise-free pics in the pitch dark with the kit lens...

However, when I phone up to ask questions about building a site etc and ask about about one of the programs they provide and answer.....'what sir? .... Oh I don't know, I didn't know we done that.' doesn't fill me with confidence lol especially when it the main part of their site!

Also they didn't know why my main page was not displaying after saying it had been published ok. I just couldn't get any were

If you don't know what that is you're going to struggle getting a site set up!

Unless you want to go through a lengthy learning process it might be best to either buy a template (there are lots of good ones and not expensive) or get a professional site builder to do the job for you.

The main problem is that these programs lead to very bloated code.

However contrary to what others may have said HTML is already being superseded with XHTML - which is a rather stricter form of HTML.

And you would also need CSS.

And preferably PHP which, properly implemented, would allow you to rapidly implement changes across the whole site without having to plough through every page.

FTP simply means "File Transfer Protocol" and is a program which allows you to access your site from your own PC and upload files to it.

Your site is simply a space (like a folder) on your host's server where all your files are kept.

There's nothing very complex about using FTP - all you need is the server name, the folder name assigned to you and your password - all these details are normally supplied to you by your host if you're going to use FTP.

Many hosts also use a control panel to make uploading files even easier.

Whether to get someone to build a site for you is a difficult question mostly depending on how much it will cost etc.

For £9+vat..... £10.58 you can buy a web site address, host it for a full year and have unlimited email addresses at that site plus full web based gallery support for no extra cost with www.one.com. Their galleries and email are very easy to just set up and use. After the first year it is £14 per year or £24 for a .com site and the space plus traffic allowance is very high

my friend has around 50gb currently free on his server and said i could happily use up a couple of gb free.....my domain name is currently £2.95 for 2 years (if i've read it right)....so it would be cheaper.....please correct me if i've got it wrong, i aint exactly up on these things :suspect:

Nope, if you have space on a server etc then that is even better :thumbs:

For most people that deal from one.com is excellent value and because the admin is all web based including setting up email etc it is relatively simple too.

Good luck with the project :)
