Again, they've put one of my pics inthe paper but haven't credited me for it. Dad did send it with this:

The picture is of Jamie Caton, scorer of two tries, in action against
Cranbrook. Taken by Kelly Ackary

so that's 5 out of 7 photos they've put in without my name. We can't have a go at them as we'll break our links (they're funny like that)

Just annoying now

You need to embed the data into the image with something like Adobe bridge, foto mechanic etc so that when they drag the file into the newspaper it automatically reads the metadata, assuming that they want to credit you.

Pete.

I'm assuming it's our biggest local paper Kel?

They credit the other togs, so what's the problem with crediting yours?

Is it not worth putting a call in to the sports editor or whoever and asking in a friendly, polite manner why they haven't given the credit and what you need to do in the future to ensure the credit is given?

As it's news they don't have to give a credit although it is best practice to do so and maybe some friendly encouragement is all they need?

The stuff I submit to the locals I handle a bit differently but I'm in a position where not printing doesn't matter to me. It's generally shots from events I've been at and I'm sending them in as a favour to the event/band/etc. I always include an agreement on usage that specifies a credit must be given and using the image signifies acceptance of the terms. I also fill out all the IPTC/EXIF fields for each shot (LR adds most of them from a preset during import). If they print without a credit I bill them at my going rate, not the pittance they normally want to pay - so far only one has fallen foul of that and yes, they did pay.

It is normal professional practise to bill at least 25% on top of an agreed fee if the publication does not use a credit. In the past I have often charged 50%.

However, if you are charging nothing in the first place that's not a lot of help. You must speak to the editor and spell it out in the clearest, but politest way that you require all your work to be credited if they wish to continue benefiting from your contributions. Get it in writing. Spoken promises are worthless. People forget or don't care.

Some local newspapers may not understand the rules, and many do not understand photography, photographs or photographers either.

Send your photos to another paper that does respect mores.

Cheers Pete - will look into doing this

Thanks for your advice pxl8. They have said to a anonymous "friend" that they took the piccie. :bat: - Dad as press officer for the club is going to have a kind word

Cheers for the link and the advice. Very difficult situation as we as a club are trying to get all the publicity we can and as this is our main village (and area) newspaper, we don't want to lose this. As said above, Dad is going to have a quiet, friendly word. And as you said, yes, I don't charge, am thinking about it though

Not an option as we only have two local papers and we send to both. One credits when they put a picture in (which isn't often - even though it's free) and the other puts one in every time we send one but doesn't credit!

That sounds about right for a local rag. Clueless :bang::bonk:
