Yes
I don't know about everyone elses area where they live but around here there is not much to go out and photograph that is within walking distance as I do not have a car, cannot afford tram or bus fair. And do not Want to get robbed in the more dodgy areas.

It seems in the whitefield area there is very little to take pictures of that are worthwhile, anybody else have this problem?

How about portraits? If there's little in the way of landscape, try people. It's great!

Have very few people I can take portraits of only my girlfriend, and parents and my dad is the only one comfortable enough to let me take them without looking scared of the camera.

I think you tend not to "see" your surroundings when they're very familiar to you...

Agreed. Also can I suggest a more positive outlook? Use your imagination, think creatively, try to make your pictures reflect how you feel about your surroundings maybe?

I enjoy it , I have a reversing ring but it can be difficult to get some good outcomes good fun though, due to not being able to change the aperture and not getting the image sharp enough.

I have a reverse ring too, it is difficult but the aperture can be changed via the aperture ring, I find with a reversed 50mm F/11 is reasonable, F/16 is pretty damn dark but if you flick the aperture lever up you can see a little better, it's not easy but as you say, it's fun!

Reversed 50mm, no extension tubes f/11 in a D200 with SB-800 flash (the onboard flash works great too when diffused).

This chap has some helpful tips too, check out his way of diffusing the onboard flash!:

The only lens my reversing ring will go on is my 18-55mm Lens, and my 55-200mm, And they do not have an aperture ring

Good plan, just need to save up design jobs are a bit hit and miss right now not many people have been in contact for a while.

Nifty Fifty or a 18-200mm AF-S VR lens would be my next purchase. and some filter as they are good fun!

Thats the spirit bud! I have the 18-200, it's a great lens for the cash and is very versatile. I took this and my 50mm on a trip to latvia recently, it did a great job.

Have a look here if y'like.

Is it a lack of inspiration rather than a lack of things to photograph maybe? There was a pic of an outside tap somewhere on here that I kept looking at, I mean, a tap ffs! :D Good shots are everywhere unless you aint in the mood.

I can understand if the area is that dodgy though, can be intimidating/dangerous.

The 18-200 is a great walking about lens IMO

Cheers taking a look now, have a look at my photography blog if you click my signature and go to the links section it is in there.

I am off to spain in a couple of weeks planning to get ALOT done there. taking an 8GB SD and 4GB shooting in JPEG FINE. Should be ok I think.

It is more the area, Do not feel safe I am only 18 myself and people look at me and I understand if they feel intimidated but Does not mean I am not afraid of groups of teenagers who take an interest in my expensive equipment.

There is loads of parks but they are all out of the way and known for people parking at the bottom in there cars causing trouble so I tend to stay away.

What about sports photography. The rugby league season is just starting and you're near Sedgley Park?

Yes, I use my 70-200mm for rugby. Is Sedgley Park too far to walk to then? What about still life, you could set yourself up a table top studio with everyday household items

Sounds good will give me chance to mess around with this +8 macro filter that just arrived. Any tutorials on how to set something up with things around the house?

Irwell Valley and Heaton Park are both within reasonable walking distance of Whitefield.

Pete

yeah but you can always bolt if looks like its going pete tong, ive taken pics in some tricky areas but so far its been ok (theres always a first time!)

also the cycle path ..loads of photo shots there think its part of the pennine walkway and pretty quiet most of the time

Have you joined your local Freecycle group? If not, it might be a worthwhile thing to do. Place a wanted ad for a bicycle, and you might be lucky.
Bike is a good way to get around, especially now the weather is getting better.

Just got back from a few mile walk with my girlfriend of taking pics of a place where I thought was nothing much got a good few flower pictures and some of some sheep.

Will be posting them soon!

Cheers, Did you take a look at my threads from today I feel it went well. Going to try and set up my own tiny studio now in my room using a table, bed sheet and just my flash for the top of my camera and bounce it off the wall.

Make some friends who take photos and will come out with you. Safety in numbers :)
I didn't have any in the past, but I joined a local camera group and found plenty
