are you supposed to tip takeaway delivery guys?

I got some really decent tips as a recovery driver, I think it was helped by the fact that although people had paid a yearly membership to a motoring club, they didn`t feel that they were paying anything for me to come out to them.

I think the best I had was £50 on a wheelchange, the guy was trying to get to his daughters wedding. I arrived and he was on his way within ten minutes. Tenners and Twenties weren`t particuarly uncommon.

Usually though, on the jobs where you really put yourself out, you got nowt. It`s on the ones where you just turn up and do your bit where you get it.

Wow im amazed what a bunch of tight fisted people we have on here.
Personally as long as they are friendly and not loads later than i was told at ordering then they get a tip. The tip depends on how much change im gonna get ***, I normally round it up to the nearest note.

As far as im concerned if i do this then the next time i order im gauranteed of it being on time and with no pubes on it.

I'm not tight fisted, just poor.

You really think so ?

I tipped the guy from the Prestwich Balti last night - he got a whole English Pound! (appx 0.99 Euros) :D

I tip in restaurants if the service is good and I enjoy the meal. Usually about 10%. I always tip the delivery driver. As has already been said. We could always go and collect.

On some cruise holidays you are advised on the amount to tip and are actually given personal envelopes to place the cash in, from the Maitre d' who you were advised to give the most, down to the cabin staff at the bottom of the pecking order. It was a Princess Cruise Line holiday where, IIRC it amounted to approx £150 they were advising you to shell out. On some cruise lines the tips are supposed to be included but most still tip anyway.

I only tipped when the crew were genuinely friendly and not just putting on an act which was blatantly obvious at times on the last night.

I have also been on many a bus trip where some drivers have hardly spoken a word or graced the passengers with a smile and they still put the tin out and end up with a sizeable unearned tip on top of their wages.

I know what you mean, I dont mind restaurants but to be expected to tip a bar tender ON EVERY DRINK is a bit much. And after a lads week in vegas, that`s alot of tips....

Don't know about the States but in Canada (Quebec at least) they can't list prices including tax so cannot charge tax on drinks even though they have to pay tax on sales so barstaff end up losing some of their wages to pay the tax so they need decent tips (20%) to pay off the tax

I generally tip if I think the service is above what I would expect as a bare minimum...if the person is polite, friendly and leaves me alone to enjoy the meal (with the mandatory one visit to the table to see if everything's OK) then they get a tip...nothing major but 5% usually suffices...
In Germany, tipping is so unusual that I get an embarassment of thanks whenever I do, but since we tend to only go to a select few establishments, It does work out well for us. Staff remember and we generally get very good service - which is of a significantly higher standard than the UK anyway.

Delivery drivers? Not usually - they're seldom as fast as I'd like them to be and usually the order is wrong (not their fault, but the messenger always gets it in the neck). Taxi drivers usually get the fare rounded up to the next whole note...

yep, can't stand that about cruise liners... had the same envelope thing with me on our Royal Caribbean venture... all the staff put on such a stupid act, which you knew was not genuine, so I really didn't want to tip anything, as I knew it was all just fake. And the day we left, the staff were rude and 'back down to earth!' It's such a ripoff, that we just had most of our dinners in our cabin to avoid having to tip the head waiter and servers! At least £150-300 (depending on cabin) was expected, after you add in all the drinks and about £1 per drink in tips each round!

Does anyone pay tax on their tips

I don't tip. I ordered a chinese yesterday, a ****ing expensive one too that had a £2.50 delivery charge on top....and the delivery guy had the cheek to stand there waiting for a tip! Shut the door in his face.

I very rarely tip these days as most scummy restaurants slap 10-12% service on the bill by default anyway.
