......or to make money

or for the social aspect

or to show off to others ('Hey, look at my pics! Aren't they good!')

or some/all of the above?

Personally, I just like going to interesting places and taking photos. And having uploaded them onto my laptop, looking at them from time to time as a reminder of a nice day out :)

I must admit, I do like to show off a bit!!
But when I think it's a good pic, others may not of course......

But like you say, I really shoot for memories.
I've got STACKS of my baby girl, which I'll enjoy showing her when she's bigger.
And we already love looking at them, and seeing how much she has grown and changed in 13 month!!

And I do enjoy the hobby side of it.
Like getting together with people, using new gear, learning new skills etc.

I wish I could make some money out of it. Most of it is for pleasure, the motorsport and holiday stuff, but some of it is now expected. For example I take all the press shots for the company I work for and if there is an event, social or charitable, it has become the norm that I'll be there with the camera snapping away. As for the social, because of the above it isn't really a social activity as I end up being the sober one recording everybody else's night out and missing out on the conversation and being totally knackered by the end of the night.

or to make money - Would be nice

or for the social aspect - A good reason to get out :)

or to show off to others ('Hey, look at my pics! Aren't they good!') - In my case ARE they good?:lol::lol:

I just enjoy grabbing 'the occasion' to be honest & messing with settings etc.

I have many pics of my kids, some cracking shots (i think) & some well dodgy,
blurry jobs but i cant delete them as they are irreplacable.

For me its the learning - the more you learn - the more you realise how little you know.

While its great to have approval - (even my kids complimented me on my pics tonight  they are my sternest critics) - the main challenge is to create something special.

If sometime in future other people appreciate what I do and want to pay then great .

For now, its a consuming hobby!

Its a great hobby for me and gets me out and about. Better than sitting in the pub...only just though!

If I did it for a living I would very soon go hungry! :D

I do it for the fun of it, the sense of achievement when I fluke a good image and the exercise it provides me with. (My other hobbies are video games and movies so 'togging helps balance the couch potato aspect of my other interests!) I enjoy the peace and quiet of finding an old building to wander around and take a few pictures of. Very relaxing.

If I ever did get good enough to sell a few stock images in the future though it would be nice. Just enough to make the hobby self-funding would do me.

(Note highlight)

I'm with you there :)

I always wanted to paint, never was much good at it, so I use photography to take it's place. I really enjoy going for walks taking photos.
Of course, it would be nice to make some cash out of it, but, personally, I think it would take the pleasure out of it, if I was a pro tog.

It is my hobby. I lvoe doing it. Money is a bonus IMO. I am doing a course at college so I can hopefully achevie my dream job of a photographer

Bit of each...

I used to take pics for myself to look back on in years to come

I am looking to start my own business, and therefore, make money from it soon

I love posting pics on here for people to look at and comment on, I get such a buzz when people like them :)

For my own pleasure and a good reason to get out and meet new people.

Today I had a trial run for my first real paid shoot tomorrow, and to be honest I do know how they do it for a living. 600 shots today and I can't find any that I think my client will be happy with :( , at least I have an idea where I've gone wrong.

I do photography because its something i enjoy :) i sell the occasional image which is great but i dont miss it if i dont sell any. I like to meet new people, met so many great people over the past two years or so  can't beat learning new things, trying to get a different shot, and also you cant beat some of the coments on here!!

Cheers,

)I wish ! !!!! - it would be nice to make a living out of it.
So its pleasure for me ,just going out and looking for interesting subjects.sometimes come home with good photos, and others straight in the bin

Atm I`m just really enjoying getting out there and taking pics that I think are interesting.

Trying to improve and learning all I can.

Be nice to make a pound or two one day though...

My interest has been as a hobby for many years. After a gap of several years (of just using a P&S for snaps) I have revived my enthusiasm with the purchase of a DSLR.

This purchase was mainly to get back into things to be able to promote photography holidays based at our guesthouse in Spain.

However, I must admit that I have become somewhat hooked and spend many hours researching techniques (a lot on here) and putting these techniques into practice.

So basically the answer to your question is -

It's a hobby.

It's partly business.

It's partly social because when we have had photographers out here there's a lot of socialising involved .

I suppose there is a bit of showing off too, we had some guests for dinner this evening and we discussed the beautiful night skies we get, I was very proud to show them my best photograph of the moon (an example of techniques learned on here).

And finally if I could make some money at it I would. Maybe when I have enough photographs of sufficient quality I will try and market them, I have a new website set up just for this but it'll be a while before my images are up to standard - and I wouldn't expect to get rich ;).

Cheers,

Neil

I love playing with photoshop but found sourcing good quality images to play with was difficult so this was a natural extension. I was impressed hugely by HDR and particularly of architectural images I'd seen around so wanted to create my own instead of glorifying other people's photos. I don't do it to be flash and rarely show anyone my pics apart from the ones of my Daughter as I'm more proud of her than I am of any pic I could ever take, no matter how long I pondered over it's composition.

i take photo's for my own pleasure. I love it when i get home home look at my pics and see a couple of good one's but i also love it when i can show off and people say i likeyour phot's good feeling. it's not easy to take a good photo well to me i like it when it's all in manual and up to you im new to the game but i love it.

Definitely my own pleasure.
Haven't got a website and rarely show photos to anyone.

I shoot for pleasure. I just love to go to new places and take photos of it. I also love trying to get photos that others cant get or are scared to get.

Purely for my own pleasure.

Can't ever see me making a penny from photography, others do some fantastic efforts, that I will never match.

in my youth i did loads of black and white. Always had a camera with me days out boat fishing places we were at. best hobby ever then one day about 1975 i just stopped until about 2months ago but am determined as a hobby it wont happen again its going to be mainly a private record now of all the things i hold dear and the sites and objects that please me personally. so no i too would starve if i tried to make a living by it

It's my job, but I still shoot other stuff just for my own enjoyment when I have time. Put it this way, I'd still be out there taking pictures if it wasn't my job!

I do it for the pleasure. The pleasure of walking (+ the pooch) in our beautiful english countryside. I also thrive on stretching my brain. My other hobby is chess ( I play at county level) so it gets me off my backside. her indoors loves getting me from under her feet :D
I have no interest in making any money from it, not good enough and i know it.
Of course its nice to show off :D
I get bored with snapping "easy" things though. I like the technically challenging things like macro.

Pleasure 1st & foremost and by a long way

That I also get paid is a huge bonus for me too

I'd guess many would say I'm 'Lucky' to have a job I love, but luck per se has nothing to do with it, and as a business it's probably a lot harder with longer hours than many 'normal' jobs, which is why it's great to love it as otherwise I reckon it could be a right pain in the arse

DD

Own pleasure, showing off (who doesn't like to show off from time to time, even if it's just to the wife!), and the social aspect do it for me.

I would love to sell a shot or two, but for me it's not that important.

Photography has the right mix of technical science and creativity to make it an interesting hobby for me, if I make a few bob on the side to pay for film, fliters and other bits & bobs, then that's a bonus.

I shoot for memories and pleasure. I would like to be a photojournalist though so I'm trying to get a portfolio together at the moment, then I suppose it would be for money too.

Fame and Fortune :)

Its everyhting, Hobby, Pleasure, Memories and money.. I have recently taken the step from hobbyist to self employed sports photographer... I still get the same pleasure from taking pictures but its not quite the same...

Yep same here. Initially the equipment and wonder of the dark room was my main pleasure ...nowadays its more the chance to be creative, from wandering alone, to over processing, I find the whole process very therapeutic and enjoyable.

I do sell images from time to time and do get a warm cosy feeling that people like my stuff, I fear if I was try and make a living as a traditional tog I'd ruin my passion or it would become mundane just like most other jobs, I don't want to spoil a good thing.

Pleasure only. It's a hobby I have taken up to get my lazy *&%* OUT of the TV couch, and one which gives immense joy (and frustrations). Great thread!

I think I just do it out of habit now but still enjoy the challenges the of the light. Always done it for pleasure apart from a year back in the early 80s when I did portraiture for a local studio. TBH I hated the whole work side of photography day in day out and stopped using my cameras for 18mths after leaving the job.

For my own pleasure and memories - and to have something I've created on the wall.

That's not to say I've never taken a shot for money or shown them to others for the praise but those are very much secondary to doing it for ME.

Well I worked as a photographer after I left collage for a few years, it was good old film back then but it wasn't the sort of photography that was really my cup of tea (photographing maps and microscopic subjects for Geography and Geology dept). I now take my shots for my own personal pleasure, its also quite nice to post them on forums so that folks can see just how gifted I am

Mark :)

I enjoy motorsport, and photography, the 2 go very together, but i havent the time to turn it to a full blown job, had considerate it as i was approached, but due to all the little things that publications want you to go through, i couldnt fit it around my job.
